Hi all.
Reworked the exhaust mounting plates on the engine this weekend.
Used the thin PE left over overs and started to drill some 30 tiny holes to position the bolts and exhaust pipes.
Result is so much better. Now have to wait for the rest of the material.
I ordered a new harness, bolts and nuts, new decal sheet with correct colours and updated sponsor names. Carbon decal sheets for the bottom plate, connectors for the rear breaking system, brake discs and braided line.

That's all for now.

Thanks for looking in guys.
The kit becomes a real challenge as I get more and more details from reference material. Reworking the engine is a pleasure this way. Found a guy in Belgium with nice upgrading sets and hardware to make the best out of this 'basic' kit.
Still a long way to go though.

There's a 1/12 Ferrari 312 T3 on fleabay UK at the moment - £249 buy now.

I have the 312T and 312T2, torn between selling or building.

Thanks Lee for dropping in.
I'm following the markets very close.
I build only heroes cars now. First wins and legendary F1 cars.
Recently sold my Lauda 312T. Also a change in my interest on building F1.
Busy with 2 at this moment. Ferrari 126 C2 and MFH Lotus TYPE 97T.
This will keep me off the street for next 2 years I think.
Update on this build will be next week I hope.

Hi all.
It has been a while since my last update on the Ferrari.
After exact 6 months living in Thailand I had to go home to Holland because my mother passed away. All normal life was on hold so no modelling.
Last weekend I started to pick up my Ferrari again and progress was made.
The engine is becoming better and better. Having new reference material from various sites. Cables for electrics finding their way now.
Also made a start with the construction of the bodywork. A very reasonable fit with almost no putty to fill gaps. Their will be some scratch work from the front intakes up to the front suspension. Only the upper side is covered in the Protar kit. Reference however show the underside is covered too.
Lost of detail are still to add. Made possible by good aftermarket stuff purchased at Bestbalsakits from Belgium. Scratched the little tele metrics on the back of the car. Cables & connectors mainly scratch work.

Made a workbench for me and my brother. This will be located in our studio/toys for the boys/office.

Photos show the rest.

Hi Robert

Please accept my sincere condolences - having just lost my own Mum this week, I can probably understand a little of what you've been through.

I'm not a frequent visitor to this part of Kitmaker, so I've only now found your thread. What a sensational build! I look forward to more instalments once you get back to building.

Stay strong, and all the best

Rowan

Thanks for the condolences guys.
Same Same (Thai expression) to you Rowan.
I'm certainly not building with the speed from last year.
Having a full time job again and due to the climate over here in Thailand I'm only building on my cars during weekends.
It's different in a way off getting your materials collected. Ordering takes a lot of time, due to customs and forwarders.
But I'm getting used to the situation.
Thanks for looking in.

Hi all.
I've been struggling with the engine connected to the monocoque and bottom plate of of the Ferrari.
This is were Protar & Revell give you a hard time. Following the manual you would probably break a lot of parts from the rear suspension.
I took all fragile parts of and dry fitted the engine.
Then another problem shows up. How to get the triangular shapes back in position with out ruining the bottom plate?
I made connectors from small metal tubing which are pre-mounted.
Size and length will be easy to measure this way. Even thinking of reproducing them in full metal tubing.
Other thing I mentioned before was the aerodynamic part at the front of the bodywork. There are no covers to the underside of the front suspension. Research pays off and I found the way to do it. Also found the right material to make them. I work in recycling nowadays, so I found some coated copperplate. Very thin and perfect to bend. The best part is that the coating can be glued with CA.
Next I will have to decide on whether the Ferrari gets a front wing.
I prefer the version without, but detailing a front wing to make it adjustable looks also very cool to me.

New update, a minor one this time.
Made a decision on the front wing. I go for the model without.
This also includes the model of the exhaust has to change.
The Ferrari 126 C2 raced with short versions and long versions.
During races at San Marino, Kyalami and Brazil they had both.
Another problem when you want a correct model for a race is the changing of sponsors for each race. I've ordered new decals for the kit with correct size and shapes of sponsor names.
Getting the engine installed after the dry fitting gave me another insight.
The plastic construction is to weak. Engine in fact is to heavy to hang solid behind the monocoque. So I removed a part of it and replaced it using metal tubing.
Next: getting the bottom plate fixed with carbon sheets and heat protection foil.

Some additional information.
I'm trying to get the best results with a minimum of costs. This means I'm always looking for materials that fit.
Working in the scrap recycling business offers a wide range of materials.
Connectors for electronics, backplates from mobile phones, little cables etc.
Having a great reference from various sources the thing that disturbs me the most is the thick plastic molding of some parts. Options to scratch build out of metal(backplates) and make it look the way it is.
Also the tubing and wires for electrics are over scaled. This even goes for the detailed Tamiya F1 kits. Very fine wiring and tubing from aftermarket products are easy to get, but cost a lot of money. Better to get it from electric devices.
The new exhaust pipes are made from thin copper foil. The sheet come from scrap. Roll like paper and are easy to solder.
Hope you all enjoy the build. It is not over yet.

WOW! The last post on this topic was 18 months ago and I wonder how it turned out?

A couple of thoughts... that race was such a sad event because Gilles Villeneuve lost his life during qualifying. He was alive when found but died shortly thereafter...

I built a kit a long time ago of this car in 1/12th but I don't remember whether it was Tamiya or Protar. I know the Alfa Romeo and the McLaren I built were both Protar...

My version of the kit was of the 126C2 without the front wing as raced at the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix where 27 (Villeneuve) did not have a front wing while 28 (Pironi) raced with a wing. I liked the no-wing look!

Tragic that both drivers lost their lives... Villeneuve as mentioned and Pironi in an off-shore racing boat incident.

Hope someone responds!

Hi there.

Takes some time to really get back in my modelling seat. So I was busy with a lot of other projects. Mainly a non modelling thing. But I'm getting back to a level where all is coming together again when it's a modelling thing.
First some planes to build for campaigns I subscribed to.
Will be continued, for sure.

Kind regards,

Robert Jan
