I thought those were stenciled on. Nice work on the wheel/tire combo. I always liked the look of sanded tires even if the rest of the car is clean. Chances are it rolled to wherever it's resting. The contrast between the contact patch and sidewalls add a bit of realism imo. Good looking build so far.

Richard,
Excellent find. I guess that the key is the raised edges to the letters. Without them it would be near impossible other then with a stencil or a decal to have them come out that good.

I have removed the plating from the caliper with oven cleaner:-

One caliper assembled and photos of parts for the other caliper:-

PE Disc faces and caliper assembly:-

Engine and trany primed:-

I have primed with Tamiya white spray:-

Reviewing photos of the actual car I find that the cockpit tub is naturel Alminum which is not noted in the instructions so I will mask and spray this next:-

Richard,
Nice prep work on the brake calibers. They looks so much better in a cast aluminum color then in chrome. Looking forward to seeing some paint on that body.

Richard,
Slow but steady progress is the key. The painted body section looks darn good.

Thanks Damian!
I should be building this faster as it was sent in by Tamiya for a review kit!
A slow step by step build I hope will show the quality of this model release with most parts dating back to 1973.

Richard,
An excellent decision on stripping the chrome off the calibers. Your finish matches that photo perfectly.

Thanks you Joel!
Added some small details this last week but have moved on to front air intake and some piping which is chromed and has bad seams showing, so out with the oven cleaner and the flat aluminum paint!

Richard,
As an avid builder of 1/12th F-1 kits (I have completed half a dozen or so and have another half dozen waiting in the wings), I am following this with much interest.

Is this a new Tamiya 1/12th scale offering? You said it was a "/review" kit and I was wondering if Tamiya was finally going to start doing F-1 large scale again.

I love the tires and the work you have done with them.

Did the PE brake rotors come with the kit? I notice Tamiya is working more and more PE into their kits. Is there a non-PE pop of this kit that is less expensive?

I have built the Tyrell six wheeler and it is an old kit with some issues. It has been a number of years.

With three built Ferraris (Alain Prost, Gilles Villeneuve and Niki Lauda), I would love to add a Michael Schumaker kit to the fold and even one of the newer cars. The look of the current F-1 cars fascinates me with all the winglets and opening slats on the rear wing.

Will be following with much interest! Thanks for the build log!

Hi Patrick!
Thank you for you interest in my (slow) blog!
The Tyrrell is a re-pop using 1973 molds with PE added I would imagine that there are still 1973 moldings out there without PE..
The PE brake rotor faces came with the kit.
It took a lot of work to remove the mold lines from the rubber tires.
I built the six wheeler when it first came out to many years ago to remember any fit issues! LOL!
F1 is my first love in racing and also anything related to drag racing.
I will post update photos in the next few days.

Patrick,
From what I've heard is that Tamiya periodically reissues the old F1 kits in both 1/12 & 1/20 scale with some added PE.

Thank's Joel!

And adding PE usually inflated the price of the 1/12th kits by $30 to $40 which steams me a bit. Also you still get the same poor fit. One of the worst was the 1/12th Tamiya Wolfe WR-5... it is so bad, I never completed it let alone displayed it.

I wish that Tamiya had a market that would support more large scale racing units in many different categories. I would love to see the Benneton or the cars that were in the 7Up livery as well as some of the other cars like Toleman. I know it is a niche market but having some of the later more popular Ferraris from the Schumacher era would also be cool.

Will be looking forward to following this!
