Yes Rowan. There is no flare. It is a smooth line from the windscreen down to the top of the light. I never realised how nice a shape the MGB was until I got one. Rubber bumper ones excluded!..

Hi Warren

Thanks for the confirmation. I'll start getting rid of the flare.

My Aoshima MG-B arrived 5 days after ship date. At first glance it looks very nice. Curbside model with a solid hood. Right hand drive, with no option for left hand drive. There is no dip over the head lights. The wire wheels are one piece but have see through openings, may not look too bad after using a black wash.

Russ,
I've been waiting for this kit since the day it was announced. After your 1st impressions, I'm just so disappointed that words can't express my feelings. I should have known it was another damn curbside offering. Not even left hand drive is offered, and the USA was a major market. I had two B's and both were left hand drive.

What is wrong with all of these manufactures? To me, curbside is one step + up from a Snaptite kit. No engine/transmission, no suspension, no nothing. I wanted 3 kits, now I'm buying none. Even the old AMT & MPC kits had suspension, engines and transmissions. Some better then others, but the basics were there, and you could go to town on them to any level you wanted.
Today, even Tamiya rarely makes a closed wheel car with the same level of detail that they offer with open wheel cars. Even F1 cars with completely closed engines/transmission are still included as the body panels are removable. That's why all these kits are half the price of a fully detailed kit. And honestly, there isn't much to these kits unless you're only into painting and decaling.

Hi Joel

Cheer up - I'm sure it will still be a huge improvement over the old Airfix kit! I sorted the area behind the headlamps last night and found some photos online to compare the lines against. Not too bad...

But then I noticed the shape of the wheel arches was wrong, the door handles may be in the wrong place and the way the bumpers fit into the bodywork is all wrong...

To be honest, I won't tackle any of those issues! Having realised just how much work you could put into rectifying and detailing this kit, I've decided I just want a nice clean, presentable build of a vintage model that bears a passing resemblance to an MGB! But - as promised - it definitely will be British Racing Green - which will only be fair to Warren too after all his help!

Re: your dismay over the lack of a right-hand drive option in the new kit, I was struck when looking at on-line shots of the interior that MG didn't shift the hand-brake for the US market... You lucky so-and-sos if you were out for a drive with a date! That must have been a great alibi for "accidentally" getting familiar...

Joel,

Yes I'm disappointed with only right hand drive and no engine. There is a suspension, front disc brakes, and what looks like some type hydraulics next to the rear suspension. Having said that it should look good on the shelf. I've built several detailed engines before but for me if it has a hood it rarely gets opened. At least with aircraft cockpits you can see the effort that goes into them.

The Revell XKE I'm working on has an engine but the fit is such that I'd never open the hood and coming up with reasonable narrow wire wheels for is a real challenge. If I had your skill maybe I'd feel different but my detailed builds are few and far between the rest are subjects, aircraft, armor and cars that I'm interested in and look good on the shelf.

Cheers

Rowan,
Thanks for the Pep talk. but this build(s) was going to be really special. Way more then just building a model, it's having a special time of my life come almost alive once again. I can close my eyes, and take apart the inline 4 bolt by bolt, or tune those duel SU carbs till all 4 cylinders were in perfect sync.

Honestly, I don't remember any issues with the hand brake. My girl back then never complained once

Russ,
I see your points. but I'd sure have liked to make that decision and not the manufacture.

Oh well, I guess I'll get one and just do a curbside of my street car with the cheater roll bar. I will look for better wire wheels when the time comes. Please tell me that they molded Dunlap SP-41s, and no white walls.

Joel,

The tires are Dunlop SP9 185SR14. I will try to post some pictures of the frame, tires and wheels. I think the wheels will work. I have been looking for alternative wire wheels for my Revell XKE. I only source I found was Fujimi wires but they are 17" and far too wide. I'm carving out some AMT skinnys and then cutting the wheel to the width of the tire, slow going. I tired post a query about wire wheels to the Auto forum but ended up on the general forum. I guess I do not know how to post to a specific forum.

Not sure why the tire image shows the way it does, it is black.

Russ,
It's been a long time since I had my "B" from 1967-1970. From what I can remember (which isn't much these days), the default tires that came with the car were as I said; Dunlap SP-41 black walls, and the raised lettering is what you see on today's standard tire.

I have literally no idea where or how Aoshima came up with a SP-9 nor that racing type full size lettering that I've never saw on a sports car back then. I can't speak for other exported or British versions, but I highly doubt that they used a tire like that, nor that Dunlap even made one.

Those Dunlap's had a really soft compound and I went through them from time trials and just street racing (Yes, back then I was guilty of that as well), and bought the best tire for my B, the Pirelli Cinturato. Expensive to say the least, but worth every penny.

Hi again

Just a check-in to let you know I haven't been slacking. I must admit it's taken longer than I'd hoped to reshape the front, but I think it's pretty much there. I need to do a bit of work to tidy up the moulded-on chrome trim that's suffered since the kit's original release and scribe in a couple of missing panel lines and then, at last, it will be time to throw a primer coat at everything and see how bad things look!

Rowan,
Sure sounds like you're making excellent progress one step at a time.

Looking forward to seeing your B in a proper primer coat.

Hi Joel

Well, I hope it's not too disappointing, but here it is:

It's not much to look at, but I'm actually quite encouraged, because I expected the undercoat to highlight a lot more problems. There are still a few areas I can see need more work, but I'm generally pleased at how the smoothing and reshaping has worked.

Cheers everyone

I appreciate the encouragement, because I realise it's hardly the most exciting update in the world! But, in the scheme of things, considering what the body shell looked like to begin with, the result has given me confidence that it might actually all end up looking half- (or, maybe, quarter-) decent!

There's still a long way to go, though. I'm not entirely convinced the bonnet (hood) will fit neatly without some TLC - and the windscreen looks set to be troublesome. Add to that, the interior doesn't particular want to meet up with the body shell on one side, so I can see foresee plenty of fun down the road...

Hi again

Just a quick word to say this isn't a forgotten project! I actually did a bit more work on the chassis area at the weekend (which basically just reminded me that every single part requires a lot of clean-up work).

The worrying thing - which I'd only half-noticed before - is that the whole front of the kit is actually slightly lob-sided.

Whether that's down to the original 1960s patterns, or a result of gradual degradation over the years, I don't know (I've found a few other areas which aren't symmetrical), but I can only go by what's in front of me... and it's definitely wonky.

Is this a problem? well, for me personally... no; I'm past caring on this nostalgia item. I just want to have a clean build as a result. And will it show on the finished kit? We'll see. But it's something potential purchasers should be aware of.

Hi again

Sorry for the ultra-long delay in posting an update! The poor old MGB has taken second place to reviews and other projects, but I've finally got a bit of time off work booked for the next week or so!

There's still a lot else on my plate (not least the book I'm supposed to be writing! ), but I seriously intend to make a bit of progress on this build - if only because I'm itching to get started on a better kit and I've promised myself I must get the MGB done before I do so!

I still haven't found my Tamiya paint stand (it's buried somewhere in the stuff that's still packed from when I moved away from London some years ago!), so I've ordered a new one tonight. I never really found a use for my old one when building aircraft kits that my existing set-up couldn't handle - but the clip for holding car bodies is unlike anything else I've seen, and will clearly save a lot of hassle.

Of course, the inevitable will happen... with a week off work to sort through stuff in the house, I'll find the old painting stand just as the new one arrives! Hmmm.. . that would allow me to paint two car bodies in one session...

But I mustn't get ahead of myself! - I need to finish the MGB before any of that nonsense!

All the best

Rowan,
Sounds like a great plan. Looking forward to seeing some paint on the B.

What I use for painting car bodies is bottles with cap of a min of 1 inch in dia. Then I use double sided tape to hold the shell on to the cap. Never had a shell come loose yet. I did go for the best I could find: 3M for household use.
