Question for Richard (tinbanger):
I have announced myself already with Tony Stewart NASCAR, but my schedule urges me to do another commisioned build: Ferrari F-50 Barchetta by Lee. Definitely a sports car, but not sure it compliant with all the rules, since there is no racing number and no sponsorship allowed: please see the picture:
There is no big issue if the build doesn't comply - I still want to build the NASCAR one, but I'm going to miss the start of the campaign.

Very sorry to lose you for this build David, but perfectly understandable. The old faithful "real life" syndrome that we all need to face. Keep the kit close to the bench in case things change for the better and you can rejoin later, we won't be finished until the end of September!

Cars with sponsorship are allowed.
I am open to change the rules to "What Ifs " to be included as long as sponsorship or race numbers are displayed.

Three weeks until start, and I'll be building this:
I thought Hawaiian Tropic is pineapple juice brand, but it's suntan lotion. Anyway I like the simple and bold markings of the era.

OK, question time. I'm looking at the painting instruction for my Reynard open wheel racer. They're recommending painting the body sections separately. That flies against all of my experience. I'm assuming that the fits on racers aren't supposed to be as tight as aircraft or street machines because the body panels have to be removable for repairs, so the seams are supposed to be visible?

I dragged out my Reynard kit to have a look, and I can see what you mean.
I think that these parts might be difficult to get to once installed, so painting beforehand makes sense
I think that the side wings would be installed to the side pods then painted as a whole, then fitted to the centre body section.
In my instructions there are notes to finish paint and decal application on the centre body section prior to installing the suspension arms and side pods, so I think it would be wise to take a close look at each stage, do a lot of test fitting and planning for paint/decal before just launching in to the assembly.

your question is certainly a valid one as many of the older race car kits were molded with panels and parts to make the building and molding easier, but usually don't follow the prototype. None are worse then the old AMT 1/25 scale Indy car kits which are a perfect example. The top and bottom halves of the shell are completely wrong. to be able to remove the seam the complete front suspension needs to be cut off, then pinned and glued back on.
Getting back to your AAR Indy Car question, the major pieces are the full engine cover:
The side pods tops and usually the sides are separate as well so the radiators are accessible. Also you can see that the nose of the car has just the top access panel off so that the front Shock Dampers can be adjusted.
The nose clip comes off as a unit so it can be replaced quickly after the driver has damaged it. They never just change either wing.
the good news is that there's literally 1,000s of pictures that our friend Mr. Google will bring up for you.
I'll be more then glad to help answer any questions you may have if I know the answer, or will help you find the correct answer.
