This is one of those great 10 buck deals I got a while back.
A few parts missing, so a little scratch building needed. Nothing major though.

Hey Dave!
Nice to see a WIP picture of this model!

I've had this kit in my hands many times but was always in doubt about the quality.
How was the kit to build, beside the missing parts? It looks like it fits very well?

Love the boxart on those old Airfix kits. Looking forward to more.

Looks quite good, nice deal too.

Do I see an MOD coming? Are you going to keep updates coming so I can mark it as a blog?

Grumpy the 'N type' is a beauty. Over at fire-engine-photos.com there are a few photos of some undergoing restoration.

Also http://www.clavis.co.uk/Dennis/ has some info and a few photos too.

Hope this helps

Go ahead and mark it Scott.
Eric, thanks for the links.
Paul, this issue is showing it's age for sure, with some major seams and flash on the parts.

Forgot to mention, besides a few missing parts, it was also partially assembled, so I needed to disassemble it to clean up quite a few parts.
Here I did just a little more work, I added some tread plate from Lion Roar. (Of course it's probably the wrong pattern, but it's what I had on hand, and close enough for me, the purist need to read no more!)

Also started adding the trim around the equipment lockers.

Dave - what's the trim?
Don't think anyone will complane about the tread pattern. The upgrade will far out weigh the potential inaccuracy. I have no idea if it's right or wrong, it just looks better.

Love those old airfix kits, built the "old bill" bus and put it in a W.W.1. dio, plan to convert the fire engine to a British army truck and put it in another W.W.1. dio with Scale Link figures, nice work Dave, are you going to put a crew on it?

John, I'm going to attempt to up grade the kits figures.
Now I say attempt, as you know they are not exactly the greatest figures ever created. And displaying them just may not happen.

I also have the bus, another previously started, same 10 buck deal, somewhere. I should look for it and finish that one also.

A little update, which I guess you are suppose to do if you are doing a blog.
Most is just fitted together so far, so alignment is probably a little off on some things.

Continued adding some more tread-plate.

Started scratch building the instrument panel details. (Part was missing in the kit.)

Did a little more on this one this week, discovered I should have used .10 rod, instead of the .15 rod, but I'll live with it.
Added some more tread plate.
replaced the hood (bonnet) hold downs, (still need to trim them) and added lift handles from a scrap photo etched set.
decided I didn't like how the gages turned out, so replaced them.

The trim work looks nice. did you bend the trim around a jig or use heat at all?

For the lockers I simply followed the molded lines with a scribe, sanded them off and laid in the rod into the scribed lines. Plasticstrut .10 and .15 rod is pretty flexible, and can take some pretty tight bends without snapping. For the hood hold downs I just use again plasticstut .10 and .15 rod, a little .005 sheet, cut into really thin strip. For the curved top section, I rolled a mouse tail file handle over the rod, on my cutting mat. (They still need to be trimmed down.)

Did a little work on this last night.
Redid the radiator, still some details to add. Hopefully I'll get alittle more done tonight.
Front:

Rear, which won't be seen as the hood/bonnet will be closed. I'm not going to detail the engine, and interior will be painted flat black.

Front again:

Replaced the Dennis marking with a foil rubbing, and the beading with fine wire.

Did a little more on this project:
Made up new pedals.

Made up a suction screen from some scrap photo etch sheet.

Drilled out the hose ends, and made up new lugs.

Fitted the radiator.

Hi there

That looks fantastic with the detailing tweeks. What are you going to do with those firemen. I remember seeing them on TWM article for a fairground ride scrapheap diorama. My own opinion is that that is where they belong as they look far too much like fairground dummies.

Will you be converting some figures into more realistic poses or just displaying the engine on its own?

Great work

Nige
