I guess this is better in here than in Cars, the kit is from the Revell TRUCKS line.

Haven't built a non-military vehicle in a while. Started this a about a week ago.

Some in progress pics. My 1:1 Rubicon has a tan interior so I based my colors for the gray interior off what the relative differences are between the plastic, carpet and fabric shade differences. Not going to be 1:1 scale accurate but should be pretty close. The orange paint is Model Master International Orange which is fairly close to the factory Impact Orange.

Kit wheels and tires that will not get used.


Interior carpet, center console, door panels got some paint yesterday and tonight.


Body got painted a few days ago, wheels and tires are from Fireball Modelworks. The separate hubs of the wheels fit perfectly into the ends of the Revell axles, still need to touch them up as I scraped some paint off installing the wheels.




Removed the stinger and roller fairlead from the kit bumper, Fireball Modelworks Warn winch and fairlead will go in place of it.




Ordered some 1/24th-1/25th fuel cans from Shapeways. (can't stand that there are no good ones in styrene in these scales when the market is flooded in the 1/35 and smaller ones)


Going to be working on a factory-ish style rollcage to replace the Tomb Raider one as well.

I'll take note of this. Might need these in the future. Following this build.

I can attest to the quality of his stuff and it is not re-pops of styrene pieces. A very nice to work with resin too. The rubber he uses for the tires does smell a little funky for a while until they completely off-gas.

No pics today yet, but I played a bit with air pressure and paint thickness while I was respraying the front bumper and scratchbuilt rollcage. I was going for a textured powdercoat look, I think it worked. I should have final assembly pics in a day or two.

Question for all of you now is to weather it or not.

Can't wait to see that texture effect. Weathering, yes, panel lines at the very least. Some wash into the underside details and tires as well. JMO

Panel lines were done with a pencil, not too harsh that way. Didn't feel like pulling out the Payne's Gray oil for so few lines.

Hope the texture can come out in the pics. I looks pretty good in person.

All that is left is to decal the winch and mount it and the bumper to the rig. Oh, and detail paint the fairlead which is already attached to the bumper.

Should be done tomorrow night.

Really nice build here David, neat work and the after market items look spot on!

I'm with KSO here as well, it needs some dust and dirt on the underside and wheels at least.

I off-road my 1:1 Rubicon LJ quite often. We call the ones that are built for show and will never touch even a dirt road a mall crawler. Toyota has even used the term in an advert here in the States.

Anyhow, on with the show.
Done for now, will wait about a week for everything to cure up then I'll start making it used in the dirt. The texturing on the bumper doesn't show up well in the pics.

Here in Melbourne we call them "Toorak Tractors"

Toorak is a wealthy suburb where every garage has a Range Rover or Porsche 4WD for mum to drop the kids at school, and half of the teenage kids get given a Wrangler. None of these has never seen a dirt road, let alone left the road.

My old Hilux on the other hand, always carried around at least 100kg of mud and sticks on the undercarriage after my fishing trips.

Hi David - just came across your Rubicon - it looks great! The real thing is a tough truck too! One of the few off the assembly line, rugged trail ready trucks out there - as a kid I traveled along a segment of the namesake Rubicon trail near Georgetown Ca - it’s an axle-buster, chasss smasher, body denter indeed! - but the factory Jeep Rubicon can handle it. And, I like those tires and wheels too!

Yeah running the Rubicon Trail is on my bucket list.
I've taken mine as far from home as Moab, but not for Easter Jeep Safari though I have been there for that with someone else's rig. Long story, but his rig was used as a display piece on the BFG booth at the fairgrounds.

Usually run Rausch Creek in PA or one of several off road parks in ME and NH. Several of those were just featured in the 2018 4W&OR Ultimate Adventure.

I plan to do another one and this time I'll make it a long arm like my 1:1 scale one.

David, that was an impressive build - I just caught with it. I guess it will be nice if you can pick up the panel lines with a wash because they aren't deep enough on the base kit. Other than that, superbly done!
