Guys,

I have been building models for more years than I care to remember. I switch between aircraft, AFVs, the occasional ship and cars. I have only done a few cars in the last ten years or so. Mostly cars that I've owned, '61 Impala, 2005 Mustang and a 2007 Mini Cooper S. The recent efforts of Joel and Gabriel got me inspired to get back to building some of the cars in my way too large a stash. First up has been an old Revell XKE not the easiest choice. It also got me to look at my stash. So here are some oldies but goodies:

Revell XK SS
Revell Mercedes 300 SLR
Protar Ferrari 250 GTO
Accurate Miniatures Corvette Grand Sport
Gunze Sungyo Cobra Daytona Coup
Tamiya Porsche 956
Tamiya 1/12 Wolf WR-1 Ford
Johan AMX
Fujimi Ford GT40 Mark II
Fujimi Ferrari 330 P4
Fujimi Ferrari 288 GTO
Fujimi Most of the Porsche 911 and 356 series

All of these have been in the stash for more than 20 years. My question is what has been in your stash for more than 20 years and what does it take to get started on building one of them. I think I'll do the Revell XK SS once the XKE is finally done. It seems to be a better kit than the XKE.

Cheers
Russ

I only have 2 car kits that I have had unstarted for about 20 years, both Monogram 1/12 scale.

Getting my skillset to the level I'm happy with before I crack into these ones.

Russ,
I've been modeling off and on since 1959, so at one time I had a pretty large stash-- now I've narrowed it down to my 200 favorite types (aircraft, armor, cars, and a very few ships). I'm particularly fond of two types of cars in 1/24th and 1/25th scale, in particular--classic open wheel racers and classic town cars. I also have a few cars I'm particularly fond of, (like the GT40, Ferrari 250, and the Jaguar XKE). Here's my car stash list:

Fujimi GT40
Fujimi Ferrari 250
AMT's Indy Racer set (Lotus, Mclaren & Watson Roadster)
Heller Bentley
Johan Cadillac Town Car
Monogram Deusenberg Town Car
Johan Cadillac Roadster
Lindberg Cord
Lindberg Auburn Boat Tail Roadster
Monogram Kurtis Craft Racer
Monogram Bugatti
AMT Dan Gurney Olsonite Eagle
Revell XKE

I used to have several stock models that I built up over the years, which have been sold or given away, but the only one I've built from the list above is my Olsonite Eagle.

What keeps me from building these cars is probably what keeps most modelers from building--time, and the poor details of the kits themselves. I generally super-detail my models, and the lack of wire wheels, detail parts and aftermarket decals keeps me from these cars (the finished Olsonite Eagle has a completely rebuilt suspension system, using brass tube, scratch built springs, aluminum tube headers, exhaust system and engine wiring, as well as a totally rebuilt cockpit--one reason I've hung on to it-- and I'd like to do that with all the others. Time is the other-- I have about ten other model projects going at one time, and I just don't have time for these classics right now. Perhaps sometime in the future I will. It's great though to see what others have in their stash and on the bench-- which is why I like Kitmaker.

Confession time.
My only remaining stash is my cars, and I have all of 14 models in it. I've build the Fujimi 330 P4 which I think is the oldest model I had. Might be the Porsche 917K as they came out about the same time.

I'm retired now, and I'm not getting any younger as I've crossed the 70 plane last year. So there's no future time for me. it's build now, then replace to the stash as needed.

Russ,
I'd love to see your AMT Olsonite Eagle. Sounds like you did a tremendous job on it.

I have far too many to list
Some from the late 70's early 80's
But you can look here if you like:

https://www.scalemates.com/profiles/mate.php?id=11298&p=stash

I have just completed a list of some of my older and less detailed kits so that I can slot them into the build list.

I had originally planned to do the older ones first but that didn't work out need to add a newer kit once in awhile!

Cheers Rob.

If anyone has one of these in their stash - I am willing to talk...

AMT 5115-150 1965 FALCON FUTURA SPRINT Convertible

It was my first car I owned back in '73

It looked very much a lot like this

http://marblespecialist.com/stock/1965%20FORD%20FALCON%20FUTURA%20CONVERTIBLE%20289V8.html

Found out that parts from '64.5-65 Mustangs fit since the junk yard had more Mustangs than Falcons - go figure.

Russ,

I know the feeling of working on these older kits. Unfortunately sometimes they are the only game in town. I'm working on the Revell XKE, not a great kit but I wanted an XKE on the shelf. I'm hoping to be done with it in about a week. I see you have one in your stash. If you ever decide to build you might try using Fujimi wire wheels. I narrowed a set and craved out some AMT skinnys to fit. Much better than the kit wheels but not prefect. I try to find a balance between detail and getting the build completed. I'm pretty much the only one that sees the completed builds. So my focus is on do they look like the real thing on the shelf.

Joel,

I'm in the same boat as you. Retired and turned 70. My stash is far bigger than I could ever build. The only problem is every kit that is in the stash is one I really intended to build. When I try trim my stash I keep coming across something I just need to build. Stash trimming is not something I'm good at. I can't see myself ever getting rid of the Corvette Grand Sport, Cobra Daytona, Jag XK SS or the Mercedes 300 SLR. Of course I keep getting inspired by the builds I see. So I have an MG-B and the BT18 as newer entries in the stash.

Interesting!

I'm not gonna do a full list here, because most of my additions are late and wide available on the market. I'm gonna point out just a few which I think are the most interesting:
AMT Lowboy Trailer - it must be I bought the last one on the American Market After I bought it, it went out of stock and now the prices on Amazon are ridiculously high ($217 - my last check);
Tamiya Mercedes 300SL Gullwing - still available on the market, but I think is one of the best Tamiya ever (and the best MB as well). In fact, my silver choice for the current Porsche 959 build is a rehearsal for a future 300SL build (I really don't want to screw that one up!);
ICM Opel Admiral Cabriolet - I build the smaller sister in 1/35th scale right at the beginning of my return to modeling. It was a blast (and a blaring alarm on my decayed skills). I never tried a 1/24th ICM so far;
Moebius Chrysler 300B - I just finished the build on AMT's 300C - I'm very curious of a comparative build!

However, although I have enough kits for many years to come (+ commissions), I keep buying them. On my last order, together with the replacement for Porsche 959, I added a Dodge Deora, an Edsel Pacer '58 and a '34 Ford Pickup 3 in 1, all by AMT, all of them revised molds.

I would be very interested in a '66 Mustang (bare stock) for a commission build (actually three of them), but the prices on E-bay are just crazy.

Joel, PM me, and I'll send some photos. It was not an easy build, but came out pretty well, even winning a 1st place in the "open wheel" category several years in an IPMS show. I used the kit decals too-- which was a daunting task as they are so thick.

Russ, I have been collecting "parts" for my 1/25 & 1/24 kits for years now, and have quite a collection of wheels for the open wheel racer, but stock models seem to be harder to find suitable parts for. I'll look at the Fujimi wheels. Fujimi has some great car kits. I wish there were more open wheel racers out there, and classics, but it seems they are from a different generation now.

I don’t have any 20 year old kits either - I’m guessing I have about 40 kits, mostly armor and 1/35 related, but do have a few cars in 1/24 or 1/25 to build:

Celica 1600 GT Race
LB Works 130 Laurel
Ford F-350
Calsonic Skyline GTR
Zakspeed ZK 891
Nissan R-390 GT-1

So, there’s enough variety here to keep me interested in trying for a while -

I have several kits in the total stash that are 60 years old or older this year! But except for the Revell XKE, and the Fujimi Ferrari, all the car kits I have are over 20 years old! I have several other kits between 20-40 years old. We often look at the dates on a box and determine age. But in fact, the molds from these kits determine the age, not the box (although some of the boxes in my stash are indeed original boxes). Age does not necessarily mean "bad" . In fact, my 40 year old+ Jo-Han kits rival many new releases. I wish somebody would find those molds and re-issue them, but I understand they've been lost.

Russ,
I still find it rather hard to imagine that a whole set of molds can just disappear. Odds are they were destroyed at some point. Now that would be a real crime.

Joel, yes, I think you are right-- I read someplace several years ago that when Jo-Han went out of business in the 70s, their molds where basically dumped and left to rot in a warehouse someplace, and by the time anyone else was interested they'd become useless. I'll have to do some research, but I think there's a story on line about it somewhere. I sent you a PM regarding the Olsonite Eagle.

Since I only got back into modelling about 12 years ago none of the car stash is that old than that.
My stash is pretty focused on one genre because when I was young I had built some Tamiya 1/12 F1 cars which was great being an F1 fan and the Tamiya cars clearly detailing how they were constructed. So when I return to the hobby in mid-2000s Tamiya had started re-releasing their F1 kits from the 70s and 80s so it seemed natural.
Tamiya McLaren MP-4/6
Tamiya Ferrari T3
Tamiya Renault RE-20
Tamiya Wolf Mk 1
Tamiya Ferrari T1
Tamiya Tyrell P-34
Tamiya Lotus 78
Tamiya Lotus 72D
Tamiya Tyrell 3
Tamiya McLaren M23 ( Yardley)
Tamiya Lotus 49
Tamiya Martini Porsche 935
Italeri Alfa Romeo 179C

I haven't built any of them as I was always nervous about the painting of them (my 70s efforts would have all been with a hairy stick).
Now I have a kit done(Porsche campaign) and the Ferrari underway for further practice it maybe time to get one going. It would be interesting to see if they have stood the test of time, some of these are 40yr+ old kits.

cheers
Michael

D,
That means that you've started more then 50% of your stash!! That's gotta be a record for sure. But on the other side of the coin you're slowly working that started number down.

Michael,
Now that's a collection that one can really be proud of. A Lot of those kits as you've said have been re-issued, so you'll find some PE, hoses, and such. What always concerns me is the decals. As they age, they do dry out, and in some cases become unusable. But the good news is that most of them are easily replaced by AM decal guys. IndyCal is a perfect example.
