I can see why Revell suggest black for the whole of the underside. Perhaps that was one of the stock options?

:D I Guess That I Was Just A Fool to think painting the underside would be straightforward! On the second of the photos it looks like at least part of the inside of the rear arches is white - there's certainly a clear division between red/brown primer and something very pale...

I see exactly what you mean, but if you look at the first image the light reflecting off the black wheel arch makes it look almost white. I guess you will just need to buy one, ship it across the pond and hoist it up for a look

Yep - the first shot had me confused for a moment - but, as you say, it's just shine - but the second shows a definite colour division.

If I start repeating titles of Buddy's songs in the course of this thread - we'll you'll just have to put up with it and accept that it's in the cause of showcasing some great music (if I spot obvious repetitions, I'll try to go for different takes or mixes).

Anyway, and I don't think we've had this classic yet, I might have been in a Fool's Paradise in thinking I could nail down exact colours easily. Just like with aircraft, the restored examples open up a total minefield of possible finishes...

I've got the day off work on Friday, so I think that could be the cue to just make a call and move on. I want to start playing with the interior.

My thoughts entirely - come a point, it'll have to do and I won't be Changing All Those Changes if fresh info comes to light.

I'm looking forward to doing the interior with its multi-tone trim. From everything I've read and heard about Buddy Holly, he liked to keep his possessions looking sharp, so I'll go for a pretty pristine interior.

Oh Boy - some neat Burnt Umber and Payne's Grey oil paint is certainly starting to kill the vivid orange!

The first stage is always fun - just scrubbing the paint roughly into the nooks and crannies and around raised details:



After letting it dry for an hour or so (depending on the temperature), it's time to start removing the excess with cotton buds and a soft brushes:



I'll let it dry a bit more before going further, removing and blending more of the oil paint. Once I'm happy, I'll let it dry fully (the beauty of oils is the long working time - and, when applied like this, there are no tide marks), and then dry brush things before sealing it with matt varnish ready for dusting with pastels.

Looking good Rowan, this has dulled the orange down very nicely and looks like a nice layer of road grime. I take it that this means the wheel wells are staying underside orange?

Yep - it's progress at last... as regards the wheel arches - no, the red primer will be Gone before long. I'm going to follow what seems to be what's going on with a few full-sized cars on the Internet and have black in the front arches (they are black on the reverse too, so that makes sense), and the body colour at the back.

The rear wheels will be hidden anyway, because I've got to scratch-build covers. That's probably the next big job to be sure they look OK.

I've been busy downloading photos of the interior and, suffice to say, Revell's instructions miss a lot! The real thing is an amazing mix of colours and textures - it's just gorgeous! I won't be able to match it, but I'll do my best...

Indeed! The sites I linked on the previous page both have great interior shots of restores and unrestored cars, they clearly show the challenge you have in front of you!

If you manage to get this right, you're going to have to Tell Me How .

I'm certainly relieved the orange is Gone. There's a way to go yet - I have an effect in mind with highlighting and pastels, but it's getting there...

I'm juggling builds at the moment between this and aircraft projects, but I hope to make a start on the interior tomorrow.

Hi again

My planned time at the workbench has sadly been Slippin' & Slidin' (this version version brings back happy memories as the very first song I learned to play! ), but I've got a plan of attack for the interior.

I enlarged the illustration from Revell's instructions and marked in the various colours from numerous shots of the interior of Cay Coral Impalas. The seats will be a slight compromise, because Revell have moulded one too few panel in the upholstery, but the effect should still look fun.

I think I've reached a point were I'm going to have to do some experiments mixing up something passable for Cay Coral, because I want to use it in the rear wheel arches and I'll need it for some parts of the interior too.
