In between travelling and letting work get in the way of important things in life I have been slowly working away on this build. The invisible effort comes in making things fit. This might be Tamiya but they are also 1974 moulds and everything requires some effort, especially the big pieces.
Anyway, the cockpit has some key elements completed and the front suspension assembled but not finalised.




I have yet to figure out how to make the seatbelts sit down but the're in place for the moment.

The tricky stuff here is that the body needs a fair amount of work to bring top and bottom sections together but the suspension has to be fitted within those two pieces so masking is going to a pain. I may paint them separately, then join them and then paint the joins hopefully reducing the masking effort.
But in the meantime, since all the main components are now assembled and cleaned up, this what we are aiming for.


I will stop here for the moment and switch over to the Blue Oval campaign and get those builds up and running.

It wouldn't be model making if it didn't require some trimming etc. You're doing a great job of it Michael!

Looking very nice Michael, some excellent detail work and the metallics are spot on!

Like Russ said, there has to be a degree of adjustment required otherwise it's just straight up assembly.

I'm pretty sure that the kit you're referring to is the Tamiya 1/12 scale Brabham BT44B kit. A quick search, and my 1st stop being Indy Cals has the correct decals for this kit. Michael's decals are 1st class and a pleasure to work with.

1st off, sorry for hi hacking your thread for my post to Jesper.

You've really accomplished a ton of work to date. Most impressive for sure. The Pit is really shaping up quite nicely with all those rivets, and the fire extinguisher with the decals and Shiny Aluminum straps looks as real as it can get.

Painting a F1 car has always been a real challenge for me. When I can, I paint body panels before I attach them if possible, and if the fit permits it. If not, then it's mask and pray time. But I have complete confidence in your abilities for a perfect paint application. Can't wait to see it with some paint on the skins.

So true! I just spent a lot of time putting the front, 4 pieces, the air scoop, two pieces and the rear wing, 2 pieces together. The air scoop was the most annoying. They moulded one side thicker than the other!

Never mind a hijack. Always good to share info. While I am sure Jesper will appreciate the info they aren't the decals he is looking for. Tamiya released an earlier version of the BT44, which has never been re-released I think. The decals for that are different.
Jesper, if you read this, you should post some pictures of what you are looking for.
On the same note though I checked out the Indycal website, they have some interesting schemes there, especially for Porsches.

Thanks Nick. Should be more to add, but fortunately I ran out. I underestimated how many an aluminium car needs. Will order more soon so off to build some Blue Oval.

Thanks for the heads up. I really had no idea that Tamiya would have released two versions of the Brabham in 1/12 scale. I'll have to Google it and see what's what.

Back from holiday and i didn't feel the vibe for the Escort in the Blue Oval campaign. So as try and do something I reverted to monotony and did some riveting on the rear wing and support to get me back into. 100+ rivets later and I am happy to go back to the Escort.

Nice work on the tedious task - you did a heck of a job keeping all those rivets in a straight line and evenly spaced! A special tip-o-the-xacto to you for that! Looking forward to seeing just how far you’ll take this detailing. It seems that it can become somewhat compulsive - just pushing to see how far you can go!

Thank you all. The monotony of riveting is a great way to pass afternoon. It almost done with just some more at the front around the suspension and front bulkhead. Here it becomes more functional because I have to install the front suspension and bulkhead before I can add the final rivets which will help hold everything in place.

Time to deal with one of the issues of this kit. The nose piece is slightly bowed top and bottom. It covers the battery and a slight tubular frame neither of which will straighten the plastic, which is pretty thick anyway. i was going to go with some spacers to widen it and put it in hot water. Before I take the plunge any other ideas?

Michael,

I'd go with a spacer that not only pushes the top and bottom into proper alignment, but fills as much of the cavity as possible. Then a few quick dips into a hot water bath, let it cool, then check. Hopefully, it will work on the 1st go around.

The alternate, which is the method I most often use is the spacers, then glue it in place with a testers type of tube glue. Hopefully, over time the plastic will relax some and accept the new shaping.

I'm thinking a single spacer right in the centre to start with might do the trick, but will the spacers interfere with the fit over the battery and frame?
