could anyone shed some insight how the engine/ axle connection would be made?

(see: other vehicles - motorlore)
but no good pictures of the powertrain.

not sure if anyone cares about this, but I was offered some information regarding "industrial motors" which I had no knowledge existed:

Unfortunately, I don't have a clue. While VW powered, you might get some help from the guys on the Model Road Site.

All I can tell you is the flywheel is on the back of the fan housing unit (the large upright black casing) and would bolt up to the transmission bell housing right there. So, however it is connected to the wheels it is happening right on back of the fan housing judging from how close it is to the wheels. The pics just don't show enough.
If you go with the VW version keep in mind the years of manufacture. Also, even though they are basically identical to the engine used in their cars, it could not just be dropped into a car and work as there were certain differences that might affect how it connected to whatever it powered.
