The only way to avoid that issue if you're painting via Rattle can is to evaluate the paint job requirements before you start. If you think that there is even the slightest chance of needing another can, then buy the new can and use it rather then the other can.

But what if one full can isn't going to be enough? There the answer is if you think one can is just marginal, then buy two cans from the same display/shelf at the same time. The odds are that they're from the same lot. All cans will have a lot # on the bottom, so make sure you check just in case the retailer refilled a half full rack slot.

And lastly, what if you've already used one can and need to finish up with a 2nd can which isn't from the same lot? Since you're not decanting to use through an air brush, there's not much you can do about it other then try to give the entire area one consistent color coat.
