Welcome folks, the warm-up laps are completed and it's time for the flag to drop to get this Group Build under way!

Rules and Regs and Enlistment page is HERE

Lead-up discussion thread is HERE

We won't be putting completed photos into a gallery, instead we will create a photo feature at the completion of the event.

A big thank you to Richard (tinbanger) for taking on the leader role here, this promises to be another great Group Build and I'm looking forward to following the wide range of builds that are sure to roll in.

You know the drill, lot's of photos, lots of updates, lots of support and encouragement for your fellow autophiles in the difficult times that we are all facing right now. This forum is especially important in these times of social isolation, so let's turn it into a positive! Please stay safe, and best of luck to everybody with all of your High Speed Builds

As always, I will keep a Group Build summary rolling as we go.

Great to see this campaign underway after the hugely successful Blue Oval. Looking forward to the wide range of racing machines, especially that early Mercedes.

Hope you all make it to the finish line.

cheers
Michael

PS One edit for the record Damian - the Porsche is from 1971, not late 60's.

I will get the ball rolling, here's my starting image taken just after midnight.

I have a few things on the go at the moment to tidy up, so work won't begin in earnest for a few days, but I'm really looking forward to this one!

A quick question, I've never had to deal with 2-part vinyl tyres before. The fat rear tyres on this guy need to be assembled over the rims. What glue do you guys recommend?

And, they're off! Oh, wait, that's horse racing. Eh, close enough. Should be getting a start on the '57 Gasser in the next few days.

Hi, guys!
Here comes my entry: 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo by AMT/Ertl in 1/25th scale

The picture on the box lid is a retouched actual model. Nice!

Here the contents of the kit and the Internet Time Clock:

The box contents at a glance:

Some extra interior details suggested by the box lid:

The decals look pretty much OK, with slight yellowing of the film carrier (or maybe it is the glue) but I'm not worried about. Over the orange coat it should be safe:

The only chrome three is small but I'm not going to preserve any chrome. Interestingly enough, Ertl made the shifter boot from 2 pieces!

The "blank"body of a NASCAR. Less panel lines mean less detail. Thankfully, there are a plethora of decals!

The tires are 4 equal size slicks with decals for branding. I'm not impressed by the hard rubber, but hopefully the fit will be OK

The sprue threes are rather small in this kit, but they are logically organized:

Wheels parts. Quite nice molds for the "steelies"

Spartan but nicely molded interior parts:

The rollbar molded together with the safety nets. The antenna it's an intruder here

More roll bar parts, the suspension semi-frame and the exhaust:

Steering link and suspension parts:

Drive shafts, more suspension parts:

Engine, engine parts and interior parts

Nicely appointed alignment holes. I have no ideea about the fitment yet:

The clear parts are thin and shiny, but they are on the twistiest tree from molding history:

The instructions are of a pool cover size, but very clear and easy to read:

I don't like these safety pins here. I might shave them off to prevent painting and sanding issues. I better sacrifice some detail, I guess

Guys,
This GB is going to be like 7th heaven to me, as I'm a certifiable racing car nut.

As I previously posted, I'm down to just a few choices to start with, but I'll be building two models as racing cars are about all that I build these days, so it's going to be a coin toss.

I do want to finish my Porsche 935 K3 1st. As it stands I should be across the finish line by Sunday the latest.

And Richard, I have complete faith in you running a perfect, 1st class GB. Nothing like a little extra pressure to start it off.

Joel

Welcome Gabriel!

Here is my rather poor box/contents photo:-

And then there are the wheels!
Wooden spokes! Wrong!should have wire wheels.
Spare wheels do not have wire rims!
I will be making wire wheels.

Researching paint colour Wrong on the box!
Mercedes was assigned White for their race cars and later went with BMF.

Joel thanks for you encouragement!

Absolutely true. The legend says that their car was officially 2 kilos too heavy before one Monaco race. In desperation, they scraped down the paint to balance the scales and hence BMF. Since then the Mercedes Racing Team is known as Silver Arrow and most of their SL and SLRs are coming by default in metallic silver.

Smell that High Octane and burning rubber, listen to the roar of the engines, the cheering of the crowd, the metal-on-metal in pit lane.

Great to see the entries coming in already! I will keep the running update just in the first post for the moment, until we start to get some build progress under way.

Welcome to 2 new enlistees (taking us to 16 now), Rob (rv1963) will bring a '37 Chevy Gasser to the table, and Bill (heavyjagdpanzer) with his entry TBA.

Cheers, D

And here's new photo showing contents:

I've built one Salvinos JR Models kit about three months ago (Bobby Allison's 88 Gatorade Buick Regal 1982), so I have some idea what to expect and I am looking forward to starting the kit.

I couldn't help it, the box was calling to me!

My "Pit Crew" for tonight! Flex-I-File, Xacto, Ceramic Scraper, Fibre Pen, sanding sticks and pads, razor saw, glass of Shiraz (out of camera range!). Started on tidying up the mould lines and edges of a few parts. This kit looks really excellent so far, no faults or flash and very crisp details. Revell 1991 moulds.

Tell your pit crew to stop complaining, that is why they get paid the BIG $$$$$ !

I'm looking forward to watching your build progress, it's a cool looking beast!

Guys,
This GB is going to be a huge, and I mean huge mental health high Octane boost for me. Honestly, this forced stay at home isn't so bad, but not being able to get a hair cut, or go shopping even though the food stores are basically restocked, but no Toilet Paper, Paper Towel, cleaning supplies, masks, or gloves, makes it that much harder to deal with, as well as maintaining 6 ft between people while waiting to pay. And no sports including racing period. And even when they start to lift these social restrictions, there's no way that we can just go to a game or a race. That will take months to morph to, and I'm guessing that anyone going will need to be tested for anti-bodies to the virus 1st. So, anything race car related is just that much more special, and something that I can certainly get my head wrapped around.

David, I'm really looking forward to your Revell build of Jacques Villeneuve's 1987 (?) William F1 car. I've never seen this kit built, as 1/24 scale F1 cars are few and far between with 1/20 scale being the king of the hill. Will you be using the kit decals or After Market ones?

Gabriel, great choice with the AMT Tony Stewart Home Depot Chevy Montecarlo. Stewart has always been a personal favorite of mine as he drove anything with 4 wheels and still gets into a Sprint car every so often. Not so sure about those kit decals, but there's tons of AM guys that you can get top quality decals from. Checkout Mike's Decals as he's a Nascar specialist with a lot more then just decals @ https://www.mikesdecals.com/nascar-decals-c-8.html?osCsid=6moj08clrbrfvfgsup0aoqiio7

Pasi, your choice of a Savino Jr kit really caught my eye. I've been looking at them as they seem to be a few steps higher up the ladder then the older AMT kits. As a new kit maker, each one from the reviews I've read says it's the best one yet. So I'll be following your every step along the way to the finish line for sure.

Richard, Now there's a choice that I've never seen before. Should really test your modeling abilities. I'm betting that you turn it into a top flight display model for sure. So how are you going to deal with those wheels?

Joel

Day 2 and there are already a lot of interesting builds being started. This is shaping up to be a very interesting Group Build with lots of variety: F1, gassers, NASCAR, and even a vintage Mercedes! Too cool for skool!

As for the JR Salvinos' kits, I was under the impression that they are the old Monogram 1/24 molds with newer decals & updated chrome.
