What type of gloss do you use for your vehicle?

And when do you apply them?

Hey buddy,

Id first like to welcome you to the site, its no doubt the best site in the whole world.

Well to answer your question, it doesnt matter what gloss you use. You can use vallejoe's or testors, they are both good. You apply it before you put on decals, and if you want, after your done painting the car. Good luck and post some pics of this car when your done!

I like to use enamels over acrylics, enamels are more durable. They also have a much higher sheen look (to me) I also think they buff out better and with less burn through.

When do I apply the paint...most times i'll paint the car body first, that way it gives me a few days to work on the kit while the paint drys.

Clear coating, after I have the finish i'm looking for i'll clear cost. I'll put on 3 coat, first one 80% clear 20% thinner, second 50% / 50% and last 30% clear 70% thinner.

Here's a mixture from my auto building days...

This "recipe" gives a nice glossy finish. I've only used it with Humbrol Enamels though, it also doesn't work for matt or semi-gloss finished...

  • 25% Humbrol Enamel Gloss colour
  • 25% Humbrol Clear Poly (Humbrol #35)
  • 25% Clear Laquer thinners
  • 25% Mineral Turpentine

I have found generally one coat will do when applying this mixture, but play around with it first and see what kind of results you can achieve.
