I found it!!!

My girlfriend told me to find a model or two and point them out to her so she can get me what I want for Christmas. I did just that! pointed....and clicked and purchased a model from my youth. My very favorite model of my youth. The #1 item on my model shelf as a pre-teen/teenager. My MPC 1972 Pontiac GTO was the Shizznit! I had many GTO models. In fact I had:
1964 Tempest/GTO option
1965 Convertable
1966
1967
1968
1969 Judge
1972 Judge

all lined up on their own shelf and that '72 was my prizewinner from a couple of Boy Scout contests. It was awesome.
I, at a critical time in my teen years, let go of the collection to my nephew, Jon, who's interest waned soon after I gave them to him.
They were neglected and lost. And I regret it.
But I can re-build now. Not only has AMT re-issued this MPC model in their own boxart. I bought it. THEN...
I found the original MPC kit online and bought it! I couldnt help it, the original boxart brought such nostalgia, I couldn't resist!
Look! The MPC boxart:

The AMT Boxart:

I mean, DAMN!!! Can ya blame me!
So, I have to wrap it up and put it under the tree for XMas! But, I got it!!

Merry Christmas, one and All!

I have to show this to my wife. "Look and learn dear"

Being a BIG musclecar fan, reading something like this, brings a big smile to my face.

Hang on to this one. DON'T let it go.

I have two GTO's in stock. A '66 hardtop and a 69 Judge. I think I'l build the Judge early next year.

I have to say, I am really excited about building this car! I haven't seen it in soooooo many years, it's like an old friend moving back to the hometown and stopping by to say "Hi". I have a few GTOs in the stash now. I found a 1/32 one too (68-69 year model) and a 1/87 '64 model.
So, supercharged? Should I? I never do anything OOB, so I gotta get me some fatty tires for the back!

Ohh, the joy!

Well, I took out the AMT kit to see how well the old MPC molds are holding up, and the verdict is...]

Not good. Flash everywhere and sinkmarks I could bury a body in.
So, I started cleaning up all the parts. The body, frame, engine, suspension, and the interior. Wow what a task! I found the rear end pumpkin was designed with only the lower half of it molded and when the rear end is jacked up a bit, it would look horrible, so, I sliced up the original rear end a bit and re-built the whole rear axle, using only the existing pumpkin gear and drive shaft.
I also worked on the interior a bit. I scratch-built some armrests from stripstock and, again, cleaned up a lot of flash and sinking.
I should have a camera tonite and since I have the old MPC kit, I can do before and after, side-by-side photos. The AMT is molded in grey and the MPC in red.
Chances are, I will see what has to be done with the MPC one when I get to it. (If, in fact, I ever do;) )
I am having a hard time finding the hi-rise manifold I want to put on it. Has anyone ever built the '67 Chevelle Pro-Street (AMT #38168) and not used the Hi-Rise from it? I might just have to find another whole kit just for the engine parts.( I am building a '65 El Camino for a buddy and I bought the Chevelle for the engine. Unfortunately, I used the engine.)
I looked at some resin engines, but, for the money they charge, you just don't get what ya pay for. Meh, I'll just find the Chevelle kit and but it.
I also looked for some GTO photoetch details and a few choices came at ModelCarGarage. No '72 frets, but, the '68 fret has all I need with door handles, mirrors, insignia and such.
Well, pics tomorrow (I'll just upload them to my Yahoo, and show them here.)

TTFN,
Cuhail
