Seil Models is not very old Company in the Figure Business, and is located in Korea. But their latest releases tend to show that they have a plan to stay high for many years.
The figure we will put under scope here is the 54mm SH 54006 Mongol Warrior (AD13c) recently released.

Historical and other Notes

  • Notes from Seil Models Web site

The Mongolian figure which take a pose to brandish his big sword with two arms.

This historical figure is a figure inspired from the time of 13C AD when there were the many wars between Mongol and Europe, by the plunders of the soldiers of King Batu(grandson of Chingiz Khan) to Croatia and other European regions,

Also, this figure will be good match with our 'Byzantine Light Cavalry'(SH54005), as a Vignette of fighting view.

    The kit

Seil Models boxing is one of the most impressive ones, I have ever seen in figures. Outside we find a nice cover with the box art picture in front(figure painted by Kim Man Jin. The color that company has chosen for their boxes is the gray and the paper of the cover is a nice glossy one.

When you take this out, you reveal a hard carton black box, with Seilís logo outside with Golden lettering. The whole box is so sturdy and good looking that u will surely keep it after u build the figure for storing parts and other figures.
Inside 2 thick sheets of foam protect in the maximum the white metal pieces from anything bad.

As we can read on the front cover the figure was sculpted by Tomas Castano (Armorama member) a pretty skilled and also experienced sculptor for many years.

One thing I did noticed on Seilís figures, is that they donít include some sort of a leaflet with the usual brief historical reference, and some picture of the finished Ė painted figure as a guide.

The truth is that if someone browses their amazing site, will find not 1, or 2 but six different angle pictures that make a complete painting guide. And all other information you need for the figure. So no problem with that.

10 pieces of white metal make this beautiful figure

  • Torso and head. Also 2 halves of the arms are sculpted on this piece. The face is pretty nice in an ďexitedĒ pose while the Mongol is attacking obviously.
  • Right foot
  • Left foot
  • Left arm holding the sword and right hand holding its handle
  • Left helmet ear protector
  • Right Helmet ear protector
  • Shoulder body armor protector
  • A leather arrow case
  • A heavy metal piece for the base, representing part of a stone floor.
  • A leather bow case with one sword attached

    Quality and Detail

This was the first figure of Seil Models that I ever saw in flesh, and after all friends enthusiastic comments for what they have seen in Boston at the World Expo, I was really anticipating to see this one! I was not disappointed at all, I have to say.

The white metal quality is very high, and the casting is in very high level.

I examined pretty carefully all the parts and in every detail. I donít know where the mold lines are located but so far I cannot find them. You wont need any scrapping and filling anywhere on this fine piece of metal. Itís clean and smooth. Just a pass with some steel wool and some bath in mild detergent and is ready to prime.

Sculpted Detail is really crisp and clear. All parts are nicely detailed and show that extra attention have been paid to folds and creases and all other points of interest.

I really cannot figure out how this one would come when I will paint it. I mean I donít know if this can be considered a difficult to paint figure or not. There is some flesh, clothe, metals, leathers, detail pattern painting on the robe, so some effort will be demanded to have a good result.

But itís a really impressive figure, and the attacking pose adds to this interest.
Just be patient piece by piece and u will have the result that the figure deserves.

The color combination suggested by the box art figure is very nice, but if u like there are some books that could give u more ideas.

    Conclusion Ė Final Verdict

Well you may have not paint a figure from Seil Models so far. When you paint the first, it wont be the last. And if u choose this one to be your first you will be surely satisfied. The theme is nice, detail and sculpting quality is pretty high, and Seil Models shows that cares for the customer.

    Highly Recommended

    About Costas Rodopoulos (Major_Goose)

I started modelling 27 years ago with some 1/72 planes and military vehicles. Soon the diorama bug got into me and with Sheperd Paynes books I dug in. I loved to build dioramas and military vehicles till the Vietnam Era. I don't like modern stuff so much. 4 years ago I had a crush on figure painti...
