Byzantine Light Cavalry

This review is the second touch of mine with Seil Models figures. And definitely not the last one! After their Mongol we will look here at the Byzantine opponent of this era, a Croatian warrior of Light Cavalry.

Information Notes

The figure we will put under scope here is the 54mm SH 54005 Byzantine Light Cavalry (AD13c). A Byzantine(more accurately, Croatian) Warrior who wear a kind of mail hauberk, with a shield and a naked sword. Also he wear the rigid arm defences and the stiffer riding boots

The kit

As I told before, Seil Models boxing is one of the most impressive ones, I have ever seen in figures. Outside we find a nice cover with the box art picture in front. The color that company has chosen for their boxes is the gray and the paper of the cover is a nice glossy one.

When you take this out, you reveal a hard carton black box, with Seilís logo outside with Golden lettering. The whole box is so sturdy and good looking that u will surely keep it after u build the figure for storing parts and other figures.
Inside 2 thick sheets of foam protect in the maximum the white metal pieces from anything bad.

As we can read on the front cover the figure was sculpted by Tomas Castano (Armorama member) and pretty skilled and also experienced sculptor for many years. This is a guarantee from the start.

One thing I noticed at first touch, on Seilís figures, is that they donít include some sort of a leaflet with the usual brief historical reference, and some picture of the finished Ė painted figure as a guide.

The truth is that if someone browses their site, will find not 1, or 2 but six different angle pictures that make a complete painting guide. And all other information you need for the figure. So no problem with that.

10 pieces of white metal make this beautiful figure

  • Torso, head with helmet and left arm.

  • Right foot

  • Left foot

  • Right arm holding the sword

  • Leather belt for the shield

  • Dagger

  • Scabbard

  • Helmet decoration from 3 feathers

  • A heavy metal piece for the base, representing part of a stone floor.

    Quality and Detail

This was, I said the second figure of Seil Models that saw in flesh. The opinion judging the first one not only is altered but also is enhanced to the very better!!!

The white metal quality is very high, and the casting is in very high level.
I examined pretty carefully all the parts and in every detail. I really could not find things to write bad comments about. Few companies make this clean surface, and especially in themes that include chain mail armor. You will just need to do a pass with some steel wool and some bath in mild detergent and the figure will be ready to prime. Fitting of the parts is absolutely perfect so u can be painting parts in separate and then build the figure. But this one with hands and feet spread wide open, can be easily build all together just leaving the shield alone.

Sculpted Detail is really crisp and clear. All parts are nicely detailed and show that extra attention have been paid. Chain mail is fine and all decorations on leather belts, shield and helmet look nice, and helping your painting.

The look of the face is fearless, though the pose is defensive, and will make a nice character when painted.

Well, depending if you are too much familiar with chain mail armor, this figure can be an easy one, or not. Most of the Byzantineís dressing is chain mail, there is a shield that will require nice graduation on the base color and also pattern paining. Minor flesh for those who donít like it. The helmet goes down to eye level and is molded with head, and this might give u a bit of a hard time painting the eyes but not something to fear of.

The pose is defending and as I told from start this can be matched with the Mongol Warrior SH 54006 of the same Company making a really nice fighting vignette.
Both their bases are stone floors and they kind of match together though theyíre not exactly interlocking pieces.

The color combination suggested by the box art figure is very nice, and I think u will not much more for this one

    Conclusion Ė Final Verdict

Try paint one of Seilís figures. When you paint the first, it wont be the last. Tomas Castano Sculpting work, and Seils perfect tooling make the choice wonderful. The advantage that 2 figures of the same company can make a nice vignette is also attractive to me.

    Highly Recommended
One more figure from Korea's SEIL Models. A Byzantine Light Cavalry Warrior, provides a very good chance of painting a quality figure, in an action pose. Can also be combined with Seil's Mongol Warrior in a fighting vigniette.

    About Costas Rodopoulos (Major_Goose)

I started modelling 27 years ago with some 1/72 planes and military vehicles. Soon the diorama bug got into me and with Sheperd Paynes books I dug in. I loved to build dioramas and military vehicles till the Vietnam Era. I don't like modern stuff so much. 4 years ago I had a crush on figure painti...
