Another high quality World War II German bust from Young Miniatures from Korea.

YM – 1809 represents a German SS Totenkopf Division Obersturmführer during late World War II in European theater, probably Budapest.

The figure comes in a black color heavy cardboard box inserted in a transparent sleeve. The front cover of the box shows the photo of bust painted by Young B.Song that can serve as a painting guide.

Parts are well protected between thick slabs of polyfoam. Big parts and small parts are placed in different layers of polyfoam and small parts are secured in plastic bags.

The bust is sculpted by Young B.Song and made up of 12 resin pieces. The parts are very clean and show no mistakes like air bubbles or excess resin as in all Young Miniatures 1/10 resin busts. Cutting and cleaning of the casting blocks will the only necessary process before priming.

Parts are ;

  • Upper torso : He wears a side-button leather greatcoat with fur collar over his SS M43 uniform. The fur textile of the greatcoat, Totenkopf insignia and Obersturmführer rank on the collar of uniform are very well defined. He wears a dark brown officer belt and a Model 24 Stielhandgranate - stick grenade is attached to his belt. The holes and buckle of the belt are well represented.

  • Head : Sculpted in very nice details and really looks like German officer in World War II even unpainted.

  • Field Cap : He wears a long visor field cap with fur covered ear protectors. The German insignia and Totenkopf emblem are well represented on the cap. The lining and the fur textile are also well defined.

  • Ammo pouches : He carries 2 triple MP-40 ammo pouches attached to his belt. Straps and metal rings are well defined.

  • MP-40 Schmeisser : It comes in 6 pieces. The body of submachine gun, barrel, magazine and foldable stock (3 pieces) are supplied as seperate parts. All parts are sculpted and cast in fine details. The gunsling is not supplied in the kit and this is noted on the box.

  • Pedestal : Resin cylinderical part is supplied in the kit to mount the figure to a wooden figure base.

    casting & details

As in all Young Miniatures resin busts, the quality of this one is very high. Especially facial details, fur textile and submachine gun details are very crisp and clean.

The box shows a photo of the bust that can be used as a painting reference. Unfortunately, there is no other painting guide included in the kit but Young Miniatures website offers many nice photos of the painted bust. Please visit Totenkopf Division Photos .

For World War II bust painters, and especially for the ones that appreciate German SS subjects, this bust is definitely a must with superb sculpt of Young B.Song and high quality casting with nice details.

    Highly Recommended

Highs: Very nice sculpt and great clean casting with fine details.
Lows: Painting guide with more photos can be a good addition to the kit.
Verdict: Another masterpiece for World War II bust painters.

Thanks for the review, Engin. This has been one of my favourites for a while. Now I know I must get it some time! Considering Young (and this comment really does apply to most manufacturers and not just Young) supplies wire for the likes of headphone cables, I find it odd that he doesn't supply metal foil and buckles for the weapon strap. Incidentally, that MP38/40 is beeee-autiful! Thanks again for the review, bro! Rudi
