Italian Masterclass Miniatures is an old company at the modeling world , and have been faith in releasing nice figure kits.

The truth is that lately they are showing some more intense activity , regarding the frequency of the releases , the choice of subjects and the uprising quality .

Here as a first review contact with the brand we will inspect the Crusades era vigniette form 13th century with the title “The cross and the Sword “ including 2 54mm miniatures in white metal .

The kit is sculpted from the well known miniature sculptor Christian Bodi and the box art version of the vigniette is painted by Italian painted Davide Chiarabella.

The kit

Masterclass boxing is safe enough, since the 25 (23 for the 2 figures and 2 for the base) kit parts are really well protected in small plastic bags, sandwitched between thick foam sheets, and putted in a hard carton box . Outside a colored sleeve including the box art painting is wrapping the box.

One thing I did noticed on Masterclass figures, is that they don’t include some sort of a leaflet with the usual brief historical reference, and some pictures (more than the ones on the sleeve ) of the finished – painted figure as a guide.

The truth is that if someone browses their site, will find more information on the kit , but also a lot of information is available through the web sites, so no real problem with that.

Theme and Pose

The vigniette presents a Crusader duet , of a Priest and a warrior holding a standard on a winter setting , wearing heavy clothing .

Both of them have swords and shields , and there is a second head cover option for the priest figure .

Both of figures have interesting faces, and I think that the warrior could also be used with out his helmet , as a bald headed Crusader.

The scene is tight and will definitely please the lovers of the specific period.

Quality and Detail

This is the first kit of Masterclass that I review here , but not the first of the company that I have in procession , so more or less I knew what to expect .

The white metal quality is really high, and the casting isalso at very good level.

I examined carefully all the parts and in every detail.
The situation is pretty good for the modeler, especially the one that hates cleaning (like me )

You wont need any scrapping and filling anywhere on this fine piece of metal. It’s rather clean and smooth. Few mold lines here and there will be eliminated easily with a new blades soft passing
Just a pass with some steel wool and some bath in mild detergent and is ready to prime.

Sculpted Detail is really crisp and clear. All parts are nicely detailed and show that extra attention have been paid to folds and creases and all other points of interest.

Usually medieval Crusade themes have more than one options to paint, and this one is not an exception.

Medieval and especially the Crusades is my favorite period, regarding history and miniatures, so I am making many plans for this vigniette.

The boxart offers some nice interpretation since a figure totally painted in strong red color always is an attraction , and the side one painted in white offers a good contrast .

These figures also are pretty flexible to some conversions, regarding heads, equipment, or anything else.

So make your research and head on !

Despite the 2 figures set , this cannot be considered a difficult kit for painting . But there is some flesh, clothe, metals, leathers, as standard, so some effort will definitely be be demanded to have a good result. But its worth !

As I said before the color combination suggested by the box art figure is very nice, but if u like there are some books that could give u more ideas.

Conclusion – Final Verdict

Well you may have not paint a figure from Masterclass miniatures so far. When you paint the first, it wont be the last. And if you choose this 2 figures vignette set, to be your first you will be surely satisfied. The theme is nice, detail and sculpting quality is high, and Masterclass shows that cares for the customer.

About Costas Rodopoulos (Major_Goose)

I started modelling 27 years ago with some 1/72 planes and military vehicles. Soon the diorama bug got into me and with Sheperd Paynes books I dug in. I loved to build dioramas and military vehicles till the Vietnam Era. I don't like modern stuff so much. 4 years ago I had a crush on figure painti...
