Historical and Technical notes
The first prototypes of this assault rifle emerged in late 60s and early 70s. The rifle was very successful prompting many modifications and improvements to add to its value.

The AKS-74 is basically an AKM rechambered and rebored to fire a 5.45 mm cartridge. Externally it looks like the AKM but it has a two port muzzle brake and thus greater overall length. The rifle has a smooth plastic magazine which is slightly shorter and curved to a lesser extent than the grooved metal AKM magazine. It has the same bayonets with AK series rifles.

The AKS fires 5.45 x39, ball, tracer and incendiary tracer rounds. The 5.45 round has a considerably higher muzzle velocity than the 7.62 round of the AKM eliminating the range-limiting drawback of the predecessor. Its effective range is 500 meters and the weapon can mount a grenade launcher and a passive intensifier night sight.

The kit
Like the AK-47, this offering from OA-Models via Tankmaster comes in a small transparent plastic bag with the metal pieces backed against hard carton for some protection.

The three pieces (rifle, stock, magazine) are white metal and the kit represents the AKS 74 folding stock version with the Y-shaped tubular stock. It has an extremely narrow butt plate, opposed to the T-shaped stamped metal butt stocks of the AKMs.

Comparing it to a real weapon, I found that the representation is pretty good. The rifle lends itself to several uses from adding it as a replacement to a large-scale figure or simply having it laying around on the ground in a vignette. The sculpted detail is fine and the right amount throughout the kit. The surfaces of the metal are clean, smooth and nicely cast. A light scraping with an X-acto knife and some fine steel wool will be about all you need to clean the weapon up. Id guess that will be about 2 minuets of work.

Theres not much more to say about this simple three-piece kit:. If you need a 120mm AKS-74, this should fill the bill.

This three-piece white metal kit in 120mm from OA-Models nicely represents one of the latest Kalashnikov rifles that is still in use in many countries, and a fine weapon in general.

About Costas Rodopoulos (Major_Goose)

I started modelling 27 years ago with some 1/72 planes and military vehicles. Soon the diorama bug got into me and with Sheperd Paynes books I dug in. I loved to build dioramas and military vehicles till the Vietnam Era. I don't like modern stuff so much. 4 years ago I had a crush on figure painti...
