Ok no photos as there's not much to see but there has been progress.

The 'cuda has had primer applied to the engine, chassis and body, body then got a gloss black coat which has revealed a few imperfections on the roof, boot lid and one door, so the next process will be to polish out these before another coat of gloss black.
Meantime the chrome parts have been de-chromed.

Underside parts also received a primer coat ready for paint.

Joel it sounds a lot but to look at very uninteresting as it's all black, be it gloss or matt except the de-chromed parts of course. Matt primer applied via aerosol can and gloss by windy stick, first use for me of Mr Color self levelling thinner and UENO black. The UENO black is supposed to dry quicker, have a brighter finish, better coverage and have a harder surface finish once dry. Not sure why I used it as it's not the final colour, guess I just wanted to try it and the self levelling thinner as not used either before, shine silver will be going over the black for the lower half of the car. The upper colour may change as I've just seen a new colour I like and fancy giving it a try, we'll have to wait and see on that one.

Next update should be in a couple of days as work gets in the way again

Luciano,
I can attest to the greatness of the Mr. Color leveling thinner #400. It's simply amazing at what it does. I've delegated my Tamiya Yellow cap for secondary air brush work, and good old X20-A for thinning acrylics for hand painting.

A bonus double build now! 2 for the price of 1! Excellent!

All this talk of paint colours (colors for you American folks ) though: For me I just paint what colour/color I like and if anyone calls it out, I tell em, it's a custom paint job

Russell,
Good thinking if it's a custom or a rod, it's usually gets a custom paint job sooner or later. Even restored cars sometimes get colors that were never available back in the days.

Well thanks for the talk on colours and as you’ll see in this post colour is something I’ve been looking at.

Any ways here is the Cuda all in black gloss primer about to get sanded

Now talking of colour, I was looking for some pearl finish paints for the upper sides / top of this custom job, lower sides will be ‘shine silver’ when I found these paints, intriguing I thought so I ordered two sets (1 & 3)

Colorshift metal waterbased acrylic paint from Green Stuff World in Spain

Set 1 content

Set 3 content

Spoon test only carried out with set 3 as I didn’t have enough spoons to do both sets. I’ll do set 1 Friday if you’re all interested.
Gloss black primer
Paint
Vallejo gloss varnish

The paint dries with a matt finish which can be seen on the inside of the spoons and the effect is more visible on the matt finish but except for my poor lighting the finish is still nice with the gloss coat in person.

Now which paint to use?

I have contemplated buying some of these Green stuff colors myself. Will be very interesting to see the result.

Lot's of colors to choose from. If the choice was by name only, I would go for "Darth blue" or "psychotic illusions"

I've never heard of those paints before, but the colors are amazing. Which ever one you decide on should be a show stopped for sure.

Not much to show and with the light fading fast I didn’t get around to painting spoons with set one today.

However the Firebird has had a coat of primer and the ‘Cuda has had the gloss black base coat polished to get rid of the imperfections one of which turned out to be plastic not paint! So next step is black base again where I had to sand and polish the plastic down.

So a photo of the body in its little garage. I picked up a couple of these cheap plastic food containers on the bay just for use with the cars. The containers are big enough for the car to sit on the lid and the box to be put over the top to keep any dust off while the paint drys.

Like I said not much to see but progress is progress.

When I did a partial resto on my '69 VW Type 2, I changed the original Savannah Beige to a bluer teal that I had seen on a Beetle at a VW show. Green and earth tones are my favorite color palettes and since my bus had the wrong year engine it wasn't going to be a stock resto, so I didn't care if some jerk pointed that out. They didn't come with Sony cassette players in 1969, either.

Paint color only matters to me if I am buying it new. I have been giving serious thought to buying a used pickup and painting it in Hinterhalt-Tarnüng. I think the local hunting community would appreciate it.

Ok there’s been a bit of movement on the Cuda but first here are some spoon tests of set 1. Oh I forgot to mention that the dropper bottles that come from Green stuff already have a shaker ball inside to aid mixing.

Again this is just gloss black primer, the paint and then a gloss coat, no clean up.

Now the Cuda and as you’ll see I have picked a colour! First exhaust in aluminium and stainless steel and the rad in aluminium also.

Now the engine painted aluminium with chrome silver intakes resting in the engine bay. Some detail work to do and an update at the end of the week as it’s back to work. The bonnet (hood) has also had a coat in this colour and I’ll see how it polish’s up, I have a spare bonnet hence using the bonnet before I hit the body.

Luciano,
The paint and colors are super impressive. And the test spoon gloss finishes are insane

All the metal paint work looks realistic both on the sprue tree and in the engine compartment.

Hi Luciano

The colours are spectacular! I've never had much luck with water-based metallics, but you've certainly inspired me to try these if I tackle a custom finish.

All the best

Joel, Rowan, thanks for your comments. I’m just back from a model show where I took the Cuda to work on while with my ‘local’ club stand. The intention was to pick up some coloured wire that one of the traders (venders for our US cousins) stocks only to find out he didn’t bring any with him!

So drilled out the holes for the spark plug leads which I was going to pick up from the trader then started working on one of the kits I picked up.

Hemi Cuda engine with a little bit more progress:

New project started at the model show

Luciano,
The Cuda engine compartment looks really good.

For my detailing wires, cables, and hoses, I use Detail Masters.

For the clear fuel lines I ordered them from Japan but it took forever, and with shipping was way to expensive. Some of my car buddies from another site suggested clear fishing line which is hollow. I found them at Bass Pro Shops and bought a few sizes, which worked just fine.

Hi Joel,

Yes I have some coloured wire already but was looking for different colours and thickness, I also have tinted clear tube for the fuel lines but need to get the carbs done first hence the Tamiya titanium gold paint in my postman post. I do need to see where the fuel line(s) go though as I haven't had a car with carbs since about 1990.

I should hopefully be able to get to the bench Monday and hope to complete the engine and bay. Hope to get the silver down on the body as well.

Luciano,
I'm also trying to remember the last car I owned with a carb. I think it was my 1970 302 Mustang. Been a long time for sure.

Also, for anyone that was thinking of clear fishing line, I forgot to mention that the hollow lines are for fly fishing. The reason is so that the line will float.

Well I got the Shine silver down on the body, this is the second coat after a small blob of paint came out the airbrush, that was left to dry then sanded back and polished out before the second coat, now the body sits in its dust shield box to cure.

Interior and engine plus shaker air intake and wheels.
The wheels were de-chromed sprayed gloss black then chrome silver. Carbs are painted and fitted plus drilled ready for the fuel lines (clear orange tube), spark plug leads are on the plugs but need to be loomed round and fitted to the distributor (purple leads).

Dials in the dash with the chrome surrounds painted using the Molotow chrome pens

And what will be seen once the shaker is in place

Looking good Luciano, lots of shiny going on and the paintwork looks super smooth. What are you taking the photos with, they are very dark?

Cheers, D

Sorry D I’m using an iPod touch which then syncs with my iPad Air so I can edit and send the photo to Photobucket before posting. Although I do have a decent camera I have no way to get the photos onto the iPad. Why don’t I use the camera on the iPad? Well the iPod has a better camera and a flash but neither are very good at close up. Been thinking of upgrading to a new generation iPad which you can plug a usb cable into as mine is now rather old compared with what’s out there now.

Lucaino,
The details are really making quite a difference especially the added lines to the engine.

One thing that will greatly help with the picture issues is add more light. I shoot even my grab shots with two Tensor lights and my Otto work light, and crank up the ISO to 800.
