Joel! This is a massive turn around from the original plan!

But if anyone can do it, you can

Amazing decal work Joel. The color combo works just as well on the IMSA Mustang, as on the classic Lotus JPS F1's. Beautiful.

Russell,
I'm glad that you like my efforts to date. Now comes the actual build, as all I've done is paint the chassis, pan, and tube frame.

Jesper,
Thanks my friend for those really kind words. I've got to admit that I've always had a soft spot for the JPS sponsored cars. I even managed to build the JPS Lotus 72E

Well, another week has passed, and it's time once again for my weekly update.

My focus started out with building up the chassis, cockpit, trunk, and engine sections. All the various basic parts for these areas were primed with Mr. Hobby Gray #1500 primer, Then all the parts were painted with Tamiya X-1 Gloss Black. Those parts that needed various shades of Aluminum, Steel, & Polished Steel were air brushed with the proper Alcad 2 color. Some small parts I opted to hand paint with either Testors Bright Silver, or various shades of Mr. Color Metalizers.

The side frames each have various lines that are wrapped in a protective rubberized casing to protect ones hands from being burnt. The color really varies all over the place due to dirt, grime, grease, oil, and what not. Since I found it basically impossible to mask them, I hand painted them with multiple coats of Ammo Mig Matt Red. Still the high spots didn't cover as well, giving the effect of wear & tear. The instructions call out for the oil filter to be painted Red which makes no sense as that's the color that STP used on their products, and Fords usually used AC Purolator filters that were White. A few pictures of Roush Yates Crate V8 motors show White oil filters, so I went with White.

The radiator and housing were glued into position, then the front steering assembly with the rubber boots being painted with Tamiya XF-69 Nato Black for some much needed contrast. Then the dry sump oil tank and battery housing were glued into the rear of the chassis. All the various lines and wires I'm planning on, will be added much later into the build.

I opted to hand detail paint the rear shocks rather then cut them off the frame supports as you won't really see much of them once the rear shell is installed.

Next up I glued both side frame rails to the chassis, which brings up a major gluing issue. Seems that for some strange reason Tamiya Extra Thin just won't melt and join any parts molded in Black. Now these parts don't really feel like, sand, or polish like regular plastic molded parts do. I opted for the smaller parts to use either CA or Gel CA glue. For larger parts like the frame rails where I needed a lot of working time for alignment and proper fit, I reverted to Testors Liquid glue. Worked great. Just like their tube glue from the good old days.

And finally yesterday, I got around to Clear gloss coating the body shells and sides of the chassis pan. I still use Mr. Color C46 Gloss thinned with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner. Only now I changed from a 1:1 ratio to a 2:3 ratio. Two tack coats 5 min apart. Then two wet coats 15 min apart. The 2nd wet coat was applied with a slower pass closely watching how it was laying down, and making slight corrections as needed. Here's 3 pcs of the glossed shells. Nothing has been done to them at all, as I'll give them a full 6 days to dry & cure.

Thanks to all for stopping by, and checking out my build to date. It's always much appreciated.

Looking great Joel, the detail painting really stands out and gives a clear view of some of the extra lines and items that go into these cars. The clear coat looks to have laid down very nicely, and it has knocked back the vision of the decal surround "ghosting" a lot.

Looking forward to seeing the shell polished out and in place on the pan.

Cheers, D

Hi Joel, the mustang sure looks great - body work and chassis. The black body really pops - looking forward to see this pulled together!

Beautiful work Joel.
Now that I have read the whole blog some amazing effort there changing mid-stream. The final finish on the black looks superb with gold decals achieving the painted on look.

cheers

D,
Your most positive comments are as usual, much appreciated.

I found it pretty difficult to detail paint much of the molded on details as they were pretty soft in some areas. Plenty of touch ups needed. Still, not perfect but it's the best I can do.

As you said, the gloss really did blend in the Matt Black on all the decals. Hopefully, the lip will start to fade once the polishing process starts.

The road to the interior completion sure looks like a long one, but pretty interesting as I'm learning a ton about the Roush Yates V8 Crate engines. The amount of information and pictures on the net is just beyond what I thought I could find. The trick is really the search phrases as different ones bring up completely different results.

Richard,
Great to hear from you. I know that even though you don't post much these days, that you're always following my builds no matter how much I screw them up. And yes, this time the save was really needed as I had the wrong body shell for the Folger's car. Only I could accomplish that kind of screw up.

The chassis is my attempt at oxidized and dirty Aluminum sheeting. I primed it with gray not black, then a slight rubbing out to smooth it some what. Then Alcad 101 Aluminum. the effect is what you see. Looks somewhat more realistic in person. The bottom with a million sink holes from the rail moldings on the top took on a life of it's own.

Nick,
Much appreciated for those kind words.

Going to be a long haul with the 3 compartments. I'm not in your class when it comes to detailing, but I'm going to add wires, lines, and hoses as needed to give a better presentation. I've also been cutting off molded pcs on front engine plate to make new ones as Revell's moldings aren't even the right shape.

Mark,

Thanks for your Thumbs up. I really do appreciate it.

As I explained to Richard, I wanted a slightly different effect to the pan then just Alcad 101 Aluminum over Semi Gloss Black. The effect up close and personal looks way better then in the picture, and does add a little more interest. To bad 90+% of it won't ever be seen, but what is, hopefully will catch the viewer's eye. I used a similar method of the side of the frame that has the Aluminum plate. There I used a Molten pattern of Semi Gloss Dark Gray over the Gloss Black. The idea was to break up the one shade/texture over such a large flat area.

Michael,
Thanks so much for your most positive thumbs up, it's certainly greatly appreciated.

I can assure you that I really lucked out with the stripping, and starting from scratch a 2nd time. Usually I'm not that lucky.

Russell,
Why thank you my friend. Your thumbs up really means quite a lot to me.

I'm hoping that I can use finer grits of wet emery cloth so that the polish and wax will have a even greater shine and depth to it.

I've really been focusing on tweaking my total gloss painting procedures, especially how I apply the various coats. Finally, the bulb over my head turned on, and it looks like I'm on the right path. Just hoping that the next paint job turns out this well.
