So, while I was plugging away at the 1957 Ford Gasser & the 1974 Plymouth Valiant Scamp, this one was quietly being assembled in the background:


So far the kit has been very pleasurable (never thought I'd say that about an AMT kit), and the fit has been quite good with no major issues or flash. The plan is a bronze body with a tan interior. Here is where I am now.





Might paint the fuel tank a different color (like gray). Not sure yet.

Very neat work so far, looking good.

I build this kit for the Demolition Derby Group Build back in 2010 and I recall it was a pretty good kit to work on.



The decals are from a mixed bag of spares I picked up from a swap meet. I had a quiet smile putting a Revell sponsorship decal on the AMT kit

James. Nice work on your GTX, looks like a decent kit from AMT, i like to paint my gas tanks steel, just an idea.

I always liked the GTX series, and the 1969 car certainly an excellent choice. I did have a 1965 Pontiac LeMans, and the GTX certainly seems to have borrowed a good deal of it's looks in it's profile.

The chassis really looks good as does your treatment of the tires and wheels.

As far as the gas tank color goes, I'm pretty sure that on my LeMans it was undercoated right along with the entire chassis in what I always called Tar Black.

And D, the master of multi-builds, I've never been able to work on more then one kit at a time. Other wise I loose interest and focus, and nothing ever got done, or worse both kits were rushed and certainly looked the part.

Super choice of model. The GTX is one of my favorites.
I have seen the tank in black as well as in a bare metal look. A grey color would certainly add some tonal variaty to the bottom, of the car.

Just so you guys don't think I've been totally slacking on my GTX build (ok, I've been totally slacking!), here are a couple of progress shots of the interior. The colors are Tamiya TS-46 Light Sand with a gloss coat on the seats, Tamiya XF-52 Flat Earth for the dash & carpet, and Tamiya XF-68 NATO Brown for the floor mats. I used craft paint for the "wood grain" on the console & door panels. The gauges & radio are from Best Model Car Parts. Steering wheel will also be Flat Earth.

Managed to get the body for the GTX just about wrapped up. Just some chrome trim & final assembly to go.



The flat black stripes on the hood caused me a lot of stress, but I think they came out ok in the end.

Thanks, D. The color is Testors Extreme Lacquer Bronze. I think the flat black stripes might be difficult to see due to the angle of the photo. Once I get it completely assembled, I'll post some better photos.

The Metallic Bronze really turned out pretty darn good. Like D, I really can't see the black stripes on the hood from the angle that the picture was taken.

Thanks, Joel. I like how the bronze came out, too. It's a little redder on the 1:1 inspiration, but it's different. Funny thing is, I actually picked bronze for this car to make sure that it looked nice for the bronze for the Oldsmobile 442 engine. Kind of backwards, I know.

Interior looks great James. The gauges, from Best model car parts, are they PE parts, decals or...? They look pretty amazing.

Thanks, Jesper. The gauges are actually printed on photo paper, then you just white glue them onto the dash. I've used them is several cars. Beats painting, I can tell you that! Here's a link to his eBay store: Best Model Car Parts

So, I'm calling this one done. Put the finishing touches on it last night. It was a really nice build.











I did add a rearview mirror from the parts box as one was not included in the kit, the Ploy-Glass GT tires are also from the parts box, and the 1969 California plates are from the Revell 1969 Chevrolet Nova SS kit. Seemed appropriate. A point of contention that I have, and maybe this is just me, but the model on the box clearly shows a driver's side door mirror; however, one is not included in the kit. Seriously! It is missing the horn from the engine bay. I don't know if I never had it, or I tossed it by accident, or what; but I'm not that concerned about it. What is a little concerning is that the tail light lenses that were in the box (I got this kit as an open kit from another modeler) were not the correct lenses for the kit. So, if anyone happens to have a spare set of tail light lenses for the AMT/Ertl 1969 Plymouth GTX I'd greatly appreciate the help. Oh, and a driver's side door mirror.

the paint job with the Black stripes really shows up quite nicely now. I'd say for sure that you really nailed that finish.

What a shame that the tail light lenses and the side view mirror just went POOF

As a last resort, you could use Krystal Kleer with a drop or two of Red acrylic paint and slowly build up the lenses to the edge of the bezels. Wish that I could help you with the side view mirror, but I don't have one that comes close to what you need.
