Hi all,

Is anyone interested in an "Air-Cooled" campaign? The idea would be to build any (4 wheeled) vehicle that featured an air-cooled engine. The initial thought was only VW/Porsche vehicles, but if there are others we could include those as well (I honestly have no idea if there are).

In terms of period, anything goes. Military vehicles such as the Kubelwagen would be welcome as well. All scales permitted.

Only rules: must have an air-cooled engine; and must have 4 wheels (sorry, no bikes - but free to suggest a bike campaign )

Time period: we have a gap in the campaign schedule between July and December 2009, so I reckon this one could run 1 July - 31 December 2009.

Your thoughts folks? This is very rough, and I'm pretty tired as I type this, so input is appreciated.

Welcome aboard James. You might find a Baja Bug (I'm not sure if this is a global term, or just a South African term for an off-road Beetle) from AMT or such. Don't recall seeing many others.

I'm already doing a 66 Beetle for the Staff challenge. If I finish that, then I'll do a Karman Ghia for this GB, if not it's the Beetle

Sounds like an interesting proposal.
I've been planning a couple of VW Kombi mechanicals based vehicles for a while (Pookie and Leopard) so this might be the ideal time to actually put knife to plastic.
Another of my 'must do's' is the Tatra T87, I'm still hunting done info on this vehicle, so I have a few choices in the air-cooled genre.
I'll be throwing my name in the ring if it takes off.

Per Wikipedia, examples of past air cooled road vehicles include:

Franklin
Porsche 356 (1948-1965)
VW-Porsche 914 (1969-1976)
Porsche 911 (1964-1998) (While the 911 and the 914 are classified as air-cooled, they are in fact oil-cooled vehicles, with hot oil circulated to an external oil cooler for cooling. This may be true of other air-cooled automobiles)
The Volkswagen Beetle, Type 2, SP2, Karmann Ghia, and Type 3 all utilized the same air cooled engine (1938-2003) with various displacements.
Volkswagen Type 4 (1968-1974)
Chevrolet Corvair (1960-1969)
Citroën 2CV (1948-1990) (Featured a high pressure oil cooling system, and used a fan that was both axial and radial).
Citroën GS and GSA
Honda 1300 (1969-1973)
The East German Trabant (1957-1991)
Tatra T97
NSU Prinz
Tatra (company) all wheel drive military trucks.

Looking into my crystal ball, I see a Kubel in your future. I think the Tamiya Kubel is a nice easy build, and LM have them listed at about 9.99USD

Of course if you feel like trying something non-military to break that slight slump I think you're going through, Tamiya's '66 Beetle is nice with engine detail

I will join this one as well. I have two kits that I will have to chose from. Both of them are Volkswagen kits. One military and one civilian. By the time the campaign becomes official I will have hopefully made up my mind.

I can think of 3 vehicles that are missing from the above list of aircooled 4 wheeled "cars".

The BMW Isetta, BMW 600 and BMW 700. All powered by versions of aircooled BMW bike engines. Of course the British Isetta only had 3 wheels to allow for cheaper registration, but all other countries got 4 wheels on theirs! Gunze even do the Isetta in 1/24 scale. The "700" looked remarkable like a Trabant.

Unfortunately i have too many campaigns coming up at the moment, so won't be in on this one, despite having a vested interest in the subject matter- being an owner of a classic aircooled piece of German machinery.

So what air-cooled vehicle do you have? Don't suppose you'd consider doing a photography walk-around of the vehicle for us? We could post it as a photo reference feature

Just checking to see if trucks are allowable with this GB ?, just "rediscovered" my stalled Skoda (well bit's of it) - it has 4-wheels and is air-cooled .

Awaiting your verdict, I also have a Maggie-D (Magirus-Deutz) cab and bonnet laying around that should be finished.

I suppose the question I need to ask is: how far do you reckon you are with the build in terms of progress? Would the bulk of the building be done during the groupbuild?

Apart from that, I say go for it! Would defo add something different to the campaign - and would be good to see that tractor finished!

For the Skoda RSO - I prefer Porsche Type 175, sounds more 'racy' , what you see is as far as I got. I'd estimate it's not even 20% complete.
The priority build for this GB will be the Pookie -

I'm not a SAffer, the reason for the Casspir name was that during my time demining I had the "pleasure" of operating one of those beasts.
Must off and try and turn-down some F1 tyres and rims.

It would be interesting to see the Pookie built. The Rhodesian Bush War resulted in some very interesting and unique vehicles being built by the defense and police forces of that country. (My in-laws are ex-Rhodies, and the missus was born in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia during the transitional phase)

Unfortunately I've already completed all my subassemblies of the Tamiya '66 VW Beetle (still got to paint it) so I'm rethinking what to build. Fortunately we're running this GB for 6 months, so I have 5 months to procrastinate for before waking in a cold sweat realising I've only a month left to push something over the finish line
