Hi folks.

With the Blue Oval Group Build just around the corner, it's time to get the discussion going around the next Automodeler Group Build. Starting on April 1, 2020 we will be trying to scale down our need for speed and build a race themed vehicle.

The rules are up for discussion but as per the "Group Build Themes" thread, in order to maximise the participation I believe that we should be all-inclusive and allow open and closed wheel cars, trucks and bikes, from any genre of organised race or time trial, from circuit tracks, straight strips, rally and off-road, hard surface, dirt, grass, sand, dust and mud !!

Formula cars, NASCARS, stock cars, funny cars, gassers, rails, rally cars, superbikes, dirt bikes, super trucks, enduro off-road vehicles, pretty much anything with wheels that needs to go from A to B faster than the other guy

If anybody would like to put their hand up to act as Group Build Leader, you will as always get the full support of the admin staff here along the way as required.

So let the discussion begin.

Being a racing enthusiast from as early as 1963 when I was in my early teens, the GB is just made to order for someone like me. Certainly my favorite type of modeling. I'm in, ready to sign on the dotted line. I'll most likely be able to build 2 full models, but who really knows just what lurks in the shadows just waiting for us to come around the corner.

I have literally no idea of what I want to build, but I do think the main/official build will be something rather special to me. Maybe that means the type of kit, the period, the driver, the rarity of the kit, or even another resin body, transkit, or heaven forbid a limited run kit . The possibilities are literally endless.

I just could do my 1967 MGB that I drove in SCCA Production class E in time trials for one year as my 2nd build. A true half street/half track car that was just almost good enough at either , and bring back a ton of really fond memories for this old timer.

And BTW, I wouldn't have expected anything but a Chevy from you. And your proposed build is certainly in the Iconic class for sure.

As usual, if no one wants to step up to try their hand as GB leader, then I'll take the mantel once again.

I have several ideas from box stock to wild.

Just had an Ultra 4 Class buggy pop into my head (well, maybe as a second build).

I probably will build two entries.
One Funny Car and one vintage circuit race car.
I would like to put my name forward as GB leader.
I have experience in GB over on Aeroscale.

Race track shape (for race cars/Off Road) two parallel lines (drag strip) comes to mind.

Maybe a checkered flag with 2020 across it for the completion of the build?

I just looked at my campaign ribbons awarded, the two previous racing GBs that I participated in (2005 and 2006) were similar in style to what I described, just with different foregrounds.

Thanks D. The Sox & Martin is a used kit form a local charity shop. The instructions mention track names, nationals and grand-nationals, but never a word about drag racing, elapsed times, 1/4 miles, any thing to clue me in on drag racing.
now I'm excited about building a dragster. Since it's a used kit, part of the shell are already painted, so I gotta start by stripping off the wrong colors.

I'm all the way in for this one, as I have one commissioned Tony Stewart Monte Carlo in the queue. Revving my engine!

I like the idea of a chequered flag ribbon, universally recognised! I had a play with a couple of versions, the difficulty is in getting the "2020" large enough to read without completely covering the chequers. If the background behind the 2020 is transparent, it cannot be read at all.

Here is about the best I could come up with.

I'm in. Got a few Nascar kit's to choose from.

I like it, simple, effective and easily to update for future GBs. LOL

I'm also in. Probably building older F1 or rally car, but will decide what exactly later.

I'd be in this, too. I have a couple of car choices.

Guess I'll throw my hat in the ring, too. I'm in for a 1957 Ford Sedan Gasser.

Well, My number one choice the '67 Sox & Martin GTX just went up in flames. The wrong hood is in the box, and one of the rear windows is missing, I could probably fake both of those, but it looks like there's only one half of the engine in the box. That coupled with the horrendous orange paint everywhere is making this one a non starter (DNA in race terms?).
Next up is the Target Reynard. It might be all there except for one lost suspension component that I might be able to fake with some brass or styrene rod.

Mark, sounds like a candidate for the spare parts bin mate, too much work to be done there to get it back to scratch!

I'll have to dredge up the instruction sheet and revisit my memories on the lost bits. Maybe I can get some tips for scratching the missing bits.

This is a dual build that I am considering:-

Now there is something I've never seen Richard, and a kit company I've never heard of. What a cool set!

Scalemates to the rescue with the product HISTORY . Looks like originally Merit kits from the '50s with a brief dalliance with SMER.

Build review of the Lago-Talbot HERE and the Alfa Romeo HERE show a bit of work required but a nice result.

I would love to see you have a go at these ones mate.

I was gonna say that Atlantis picked up a lot of the pieces from the Hobbyco collapse, but given the 2013 copyright, it's clearly from a time before that.
