Just a thought. Any of you guys interested in doing a demolition derby group build sometime this year? It'd be a good chance to use up some of those old parts laying around.

love to. I think the only GBs I'm currently vested in after SL&L are "ACUTR Again" and "Bent and Dazed", unless there's another I forgot about

Cool idea. I would consider joining. I am currently enlisted in several campaigns but I guess one more couldn't hurt.

I will just have to give it some thought.

Yeah, I've got about 15 campaigns this year. 3 going on right now. What do you guys think about getting this going after the Ferrari campaign ends?

KSO, actually there is ONE you forgot about.

OK, dumb question(s) time.....

Is this building something using the parts leftover from various kits? Kind of like a junkyard kitbash? To build something that would be entered in a DD?

James, it could be left over parts or a new kit. Probably should get a list of modifications together that REAL DD cars have (no windshields, fuel cells instead of tanks, roll bars, etc.)
I'll do some googleing this weekend if you guys are interested and see if I can find some sort of list showing what kind of mandatory modefications real DD cars have to have.

Got it....thanks guys! I remember the Demolition derby at the county fairs back in New York, it was always a good time

I'm sure they changed the rules and such since then, with all the FWD cars and lighter weights.

OK, Ive checked a few sites with rules.

http://www.riverheadraceway.com/demolition-2010.pdf

Looks like there aren't very many mods that are required as far as building a model kit. Repositioning the gas tank and battery are "optional". Other than that there has to be a 12 inch hole cut above the carb for fire safety, no glass in any windows, etc. Should be pretty easy to build up a derby car.

I count 4 of us so far. Dunno how many we need for a campaign on automodeler. If there's not enough interest we could just do a group build for fun.

There are general rules but it depends on what circuit demo you are entering
This is going to be fun

***BUMP***

Ok guys, last chance. I count 4 or us. If we can get one or two more people I'll submit this for a campaign. I was thinking about starting on March 1st and going 6 months? Or we could start on August 2nd. which would be the day after the Ferrari campign ends.

Hiya Hermon, if you go with August I'll have a go at it !! My dad used to drive Stock Cars when I was a kid. My fave of his was an old Zephyr called the "Purple Petrol Eater."

It's been years since I built a car, and with the DD theme I could fit right in !!

Suuuuweeeeet Dman!
That gives us 5 by my count.

So here are some rules I've gotten so far. These aren't written in stone and if there is anything else you guys can think of let me know before I submit this.

All cars must remain stock with the following exceptions only:
-The fuel tank must be relocated or replaced. If moved or replaced, it must be with either a boat tank or a fuel cell. There must be a firewall between the driver and the fuel tank. The fuel tank may not be located in the driver’s compartment. If the fuel tank is relocated or replaced the stock fuel tank must be removed from the car. Limit of five (5) gallons of fuel.

- The battery must be relocated and mounted to the floor and must be covered to prevent acid spill. Only one securely mounted battery per car.

- The shifter may be relocated on the floor.

- Exhaust stacks may be installed.

-Car must be completely gutted with the exception of the driver’s seat and all glass must be removed with the exception of the windshield. Windshield may be replaced with chain link fence.

-Seat belts are required and must be in proper working order and must be used at all times.

-The driver’s door must be painted a bright contrasting color (different than the car) and must be padded.

-Maximum bumper height will be 24 inches.

-All cars must have roll bars or roll cage installed.

Personally I think those are enough rules. Basically, just pick out an old crappy car from your stash, junk it up real pretty, throw in some roll bars and have fun.

Oh No, bad news. The only cars in my stash are 1/12th Monogram Chevs, and I'm NOT gunna junk those kits. Well, I feel a trip to the LHS coming on. I really hate that !!

Hey D, one word buddy......."Ebay".
I got my demo derby kit there last week. It's a 1964 Chevy Impala and I got it for $12.00.

KSO, as for additional rules I did leave out several such as the one you listed. I just figured there would be more people signed up if we kept it really simple. If people browsing automodeler see this thread they're probably more likely to join if they can slap together a cheap car kit without worrying about polished paint and finger prints. But like I said, any rule you guys think should be added is fine with me. BTW, check your mail.

True that. cool.
Good list that you already provided. Some builders don't know these details

Looks like a GO, guys As far as kits, I'm finding a lot of car kits are pretty affordable. Not sure of the quality, but for $16-18 I've picked up a couple already, and that's not bargain hunting!

Looking forward to seeing the ribbon for this one.....I'm not against a 'shameless plug' for this in the Modeling in General forum either, if someone wants to advertise this one.

Anyone know if a Dodge Monaco would be appropriate in a Demo Derby? I have the MPC Rosco car that I bought for the weapons and accessories but had no plan for the car itself.

A Dodge Monaco would be perfect, big, square, and ugly.
I have to warn you though........I'm pretty sure somewhere in the Bible it says that if you trash any kind of Mopar you'll likely end up in Hell. Maybe you should find yourself a nice crappy Ford of Chebby.
