Mike, I'm glad you crossed the finish line! I like the neat looks of your truck and I wish I could keep my models in such condition!

And yes, I'm in complete agreement with you: each build is a learning experience and the truck kits have a little of a steep learning curve. The first DON'T I've learnt in this GB is "Don't you ever buy again a MPC kit" unless they revise their release policy. Sadly, the kit I have is very well engineered for its age, but the molds are scrap metal. I would appreciate much more if Round2Models will re-calibrate their molds instead of splashing chrome everywhere! I'm not talking down MPC now. I just hope they will find like Airfix the right way for a comeback because they have very interesting molds.

So, having been my first "Big Rig" build, I'm "content."

The AMT kit wasn't the best - mostly trying to figure out where things go as the instructions weren't that clear. A couple times I had to remove something and reset it because a later part would line up like it was supposed to.

Future'ing the large clear window piece was a huge mistake. I'll not do that again!! I have two more rigs in the stash - a K123 that'll get stretched and a White Freight Liner. Big lesson learned.

Dry fit. Look a couple steps ahead. Dry fit again. Especially the things attaching to the frame!

Yep, I'll build a big rig again.

I appreciate the comments guys. Certainly not the best work, but a good learning experience.

The K123 isn't too bad, but there is a fit issue (imagine that!) with the air intake & the bottom of the cab. The White-Freightliner has a multi-piece cab that is a total nightmare to lineup & get the seams out.

I am with you on AMT! I was disappointed with the bits in the box, so much flash and part numbering that bore no relationship to the instructions. Other than that, actually the fit for my Peterbilt was pretty good, nothing was warped, and the outcome not too bad. Actually I think if I did another I could do a better job. Maybe next trucking campaign

I agree 100%. I'm working on a Japanese 1/35 "tracked boat" right now. And a 1/48 Spitfire. And a 1/35 Flak Drasine. Before long, I'll work on my stretched K123 and a Low Boy I have. I'll do much better the next time around.

UPDATE
With my other build, Ducati Panigale crossing the finish line and nothing left to do but to wait for the paint to dry on the last details, I wiped the dust from my less fortunate DM600. Because I gave up the intention of adding wires and plumbing, I attached the hydraulic brakes to the wheels and the tires to the wheels. Now, about everything is bad in this kit, but the tires exceed anything else. Worst yet, Round2Models it's aware about it and recommends to cut the tires smaller from the sprue, to fit snugly over the wheel. The problem is that the sprue it's only on one side - what about the other side, R2M?



Another thing that bothers me is the look of the tires. Yes, they gave nice brand imprints and decent thread, but just look too shiny. I was thinking to paint them over with some semi-gloss or semi-matte "tire black". Did anyone tried that already?


The rear wheels are not yet glued on the axles, because I haven't decided yet if I'm going to paint them or not... You might have noticed already that one hydraulic piston is missing... I just broke the actuator while trying too hard to align it properly. If the actuators are keyed on the front wheels, on the back wheels the alignment it's being left to the good luck (or rotten luck) of the modeler.


Actually I don't think the wheel alignment it's going to be an issue, because naturally there is some play, especially on the rear.

UPDATE

Little progress here because the ill fitting of the parts. Literally I had to hold the parts in place until the glue set. But there is progress nonetheless:

The engine "tacked" in place. I didn't use too much glue because I might need to shift it when I have to install the drive shaft or the turbo pipes / radiator hoses... who can be sure with MPC?



The exhaust guard I cut out: the "holes" in the original shield were so softly molded that cannot serve even for drill leading points. I gave up drilling and I removed parts from the shield:



The muffler between gas tank and battery boxes. I really had troubles getting the stack to stay upright:


Overall, the build doesn't look "disgusting" if won't be so demanding!

looking really nice, Gabriel. To take the shine off of the tires, you could try some 220 grit sand paper. That should dull them up a bit. Now, I know you're trying to make an accurate DM600 from this kit, so I figured I should tell you: MPC messed up with the tires, they all shouldn't have the same tread pattern. All of the tires are steer tires; there are no drive tires in the kit. The drive tires have a different tread pattern.

Jim, thank you for the valuable information. I had the same impression about the tires, bur I never dug into the problem. Well, at this point I am resigned and I just want to finish the build I'm by no means a rivet counter!

Hello Everyone..

The Hectic part of the summer is over and have returned from the family vacation, New Orleans this time.. and yes I saw a gator, and it was in the park pavilion of the hotel we were staying at.

Anyways, I have gotten caught up on the campaign posts, and there are some nice and complicated builds going on.. good going to all.

My kit is fairly simple, as the subject itself was pretty simple.. there is not a lot of detail and I'm just wanting to have fun building so I am sticking to a OOB build..

Got the frame and drive train done and the body test fitted and ready to start some painting. I'm going to do a Flat red as I think that will look cool.

I've just seen some youtuber making a truck in flat faded red and looked OK... if no decals would have been involved

Here is an update on my build:-





The fit of the cab to the hood needed some work and then when the interior was added the cab bows out so I will have to trim the interior to fit.

Here's my entry, Testor's 1/28 Kenworth T600 from their ultra metal series.

Yes, that's what I really paid for it at a local thrift shop. It's a bit started, I think it's less than 25%.

Mostly the engine and a couple of frame components.

Lotsa little parts to sort through.


It's not the typical plastic assembly kit. So I hope it's allowed.

1:28? Really? I'm sure you'll do a great job on it, but the manufacturer needs to be smacked in the head for that scale - too small to go with 1:24/25, too big to go with 1:35. Sheesh!
