Main PC's LCD screen is going bad, so I've not been able to post until now (laptop up and connected).

Most of the parts are on the frame and it's been painted metallic black. There are a couple parts on it that'll need detail painting and some I've painted but not yet installed. There are 6 parts that are attached to the brake backing plates, but I'm not sure exactly HOW they go on...until I put the hubs on. The front axle was mounted prior to paint. I made sure the rear axle assembly was level and true then used 6 Tamiya bottles to support the axles and level them before I glued the rear assembly on. Nice and level.



The interior will be done in Medium Gray with WWI blue aircraft highlights (curtain and sheet as you can see). Center of the seats and perhaps the door panels will also be done in the blue.



I've been trying to figure out the cab exterior color, tanks, battery boxes, etc. I picked up a Light Gray Metallic and gave that a shot (pun intended). The fuel tank is that color. I think it's too light...seems more of a silver. So, I'll probably skip that color and check out a Light Gun Metal, IJN Gray, or maybe Dark Ghost Gray. The tanker trailer that'll be hooked up to this will be in a matching paint scheme, so I have to choose for both kits.



Pretty much all other colors are per the instructions.

Some more paint and assembly done. Cab and tanks, etc are Ghost Gray. Interior is the light gray. Still determining the hub and rim colors (rims are still primered right now).

Mike and Richard, your builds are looking great.
I have started the Peterbilt cabover and though forewarned by Jim about AMT kits this has been a challenge. The instructions provide numbering for parts that bear no relation to the sprue numbering and the amount of flash is incredible. I couldn't believe the amount of work required just to get this far.


The engine is looking a bit underdone because there a few chrome parts to go on and I have yet to try Richard's method for dechroming. Also the kit instructions suggest the whole engine is painted white, which doesn't quite sound right. Any views on that?

I think Paccar engines are white, same as Cummins. Caterpillar are yellow. Depends what you have inside. Plenty references on the net.

Yeah, the flash on AMT frames is unbelievable resilient. I remember on my last build I had to prime / sand the suspension three times. But the plastic is good.

The AMT kit is a 1970 Peterbilt 352 with a Detroit Diesel 8V71. All engines in Peterbilts, regardless of manufacturer, were painted white from 1950 through 1986-ish. There are exceptions, of course. The OEM color for a Detroit Diesel in that era was Alpine Green (Testors Model Masters RLM Grun 62 is a close match). Gabriel is correct, yellow is the OEM color for Caterpillar; while Cummins engines of the era were beige.

Several other truck manufacturers painted engines regardless of manufacturer a certain color. Ford painted all engine Ford Blue from 1966-82, Kenworth painted engines white from 1950-74, and International Harvester painted all engines International Red (except for the International V800 which was Acapulco Blue, go figure) from 1950 until the early 1970s.

That was sort of a roundabout answer to your question, but engine color is a big debate in the Model Truck Community. So to answer your question, yes, Gloss White would be correct from the factory for the time period, but Alpine Green would be correct as well.

Hi Damian.
I take my photos on a black photo backdrop most of the time,
I adjust my RAW photos to set back ground back to black using photoshop so that is probably why I end up with a CAD look!
I use automotive sandable primer(spray bomb)

Here is my update:-



I stripped the rims with oven cleaner and sprayed them gloss black let them dry for a few days the used Alclad II Polished Aluminum.
Engine is painted with Tamiya Buff.

This is my kits, a costly kit bash to make one deicing rig
