Thanks for that though I think you misunderstood me. The pictures show the result after the above methodology you have outlined. cleaning with the alcohol did a good job of getting rid of the paint gloop. I re-primed so I could better see the variations in the surface caused by the plastic "melting" from the paint stripper. I had a session sanding last night on the door panels and we certainly have improvement. I will see further what will be achievable when I tackle the hood on this one.

It was a fun night with the airbrush. Not very productive on the '51 Ford, but loads of fun. Ran 3 paints through 2 AB with no thinning, no clogging, no sticky triggers, and easy cleanup.

I'm trying to find a match for my dim recollection of a metallic tan or pale gold finish on the dash. Remember, they were metal back then, none of this foam crap back then. Latest trial with Floquil Bright gold.

Still not it.

Well now I have flat head envy. Love the brass oil filter housing, did mine in gloss black, it's gonna get lost under the shadow of the hood.

Now that's really impressive. Your Flathead really looks good. Just one question since Mark pointed out that the oil filter canister is done as Brass. Would that have been just painted back then in a Brass color, or did Ford actually use Brass for the filter casings?

In the (minimal) research that I did on the Flathead oil filter housing I found some that were brass (or bronze colored), some that were black, some that were aluminum, and a couple for Fram ones that were orange.. I just thought that the brass color looked the nicest, and would look the coolest on a "custom" car. Black does seem to be the predominant color for the filter housing, though.

Thanks for the answer, as I really didn't have a clue. I kind of figured that semi gloss Black was used by Ford just about on everything from what I can remember of our Fords while growing up. The '54 & '61's engine compartment seems to be that way, but my Dad wasn't exactly a gear head so slowly everything under the hood was coated in grease, grime, and dried on dirt till the auto mechanic cleaned off what he needed to for the job at hand.

Well, the Roush IMSA JPS Mustang is basically done, and has limped across the finish line. There's still some more work to be done, but for now I'm calling it done enough and in the books. The rear body shell is only tacked in place, so I need to reposition it on both sides and then glue it in the proper position. I've also haven't as yet re-drilled the mounting hole for the side view mirror as it long ago got filled in with paint and clear coatings, and finally the driver's window net still needs to be made. I tacked in place the kit one that I sanded the heck out of to thin down some, then kind of bent it to slightly drap over the window sill.

All and all I'd say I won the war, but I took a pretty good beating from the Black & Gold beast at every battle as she never did admit defeat. The overall look of the finished model now polished and waxed looks rather good, with the tires & wheels visually being the most satifying part of the build. Overall being honest on my effort, it's just OK at best. I'd give myself a grade of C+ or maybe a B-, but that's it. Just way to many issues that I left as is as I was always getting to frustated.

Normally I've got way too many pictures to post, and struggle to get down to a Baker's dozen, but this time I didn't come close @ just 7 pictures. That's one thing about table top photography, you get to see every single error and issue all over again.

I've still got two more Revell kits in my stash, the Hot Wheels Camaro with Slixx decals, which has the two piece body, and the Folger's Roush IMSA GTO Mustang with a 1 pc body which I do intend to build sooner then later as I have a ton of ideas including scratch building a lot of the interior. Hopefully, the build will be of a higher overall quality.

Congrats on getting across the line Joel, it looks really great. It is very difficult to pick up any of the issues that you faced, you have put together another excellent display piece. As you said, the wheels are a real highlight, definitely well worth the effort that you put in to get the black wash to look like a true wire effect, and the black/gold/silver combo is spot on.

Joel, yes, this is a custom job. Did you ever see the movie "Grease"? That's the car I'm building. Not exactly a car that could be built by a bunch of high school students in a semester, but in Hollywood anything is possible!

Anyways hello everyone.. just thought I'd show some of my work so far on the fairlane.. getting things ready for paint still so not much.. seems to be a decent basic kit.. lots of options but I'm going stock..



I'm planning for a green over green paint scheme that seems to be little liked by the car restorers.. but to me it screams 50's.. oh and I have a lot of green paint.. will mix my own colors so may not be exact but we will see..

I think that everyone in my generation has seen Grease multiple times. Personally, I'm way past the baker's dozen mark and still counting. As for the car, well, like you said no high school auto shop would ever have allocated funds for a Hot Rod back on those days. And if I can remember correctly, didn't it actually fly at the end of the movie with Danny & Sandy? To tell the truth, my favorite girl in the "flick" was Rizzo not Sandy.

I'm right there with you. I don't think I've seen Grease that may times, but I did see it in the theater.

The car that flies at the end is the red car with the clear hood from the Greased Lightning scene. I've always wondered how they pull this movie off in a stage production.

Where in New York are you? I'm just east of Syracuse.

Now that's a very good question about the stage version. I'm guessing that they had a super light mock up that they used for the stage version, so it fly via wires.

As for where I live: Selden, Suffolk county, Long Island.

Heading back into the basement today for the first time since before Christmas. Will make a determination if I can do the Bronco justice in the time remaining or if I'll switch to something quicker and move the Bronco to the shelf for now. I'm losing a week or two in Feb due to business travel as well as most of the coming week.

Everyone else's projects look to be moving along pretty well.
