Great work on the tyres Joel, especially like the hubs and the wash which makes the details stand out so well. Modeller's license is perfectly acceptable when it comes to seat belts. It is something that most manufacturers seem to do quite poorly with their usual half belt decal sets. The instrument panel looks nice and colourful though. Looking forward to body and cabin coming together.

cheers

Very nice work Joel, the little splashes of colour really look good in amongst the black/grey scheme. This build is coming together beautifully.

Some more assembly time tonight, fitting off the NOS system, seat assembly, steering wheel and tacho.

D,
Now that's really impressive for sure. The NOS assembly really just jumps right out at the viewer as does the rest of the interior.

Remember, I am building this strictly OOB so no frills... which is hard to do!

I have primered the body just no photos...

Patrick,

The engine compartment looks darn good to me. No need to apologize for an OOB build. It's the final results as a presentation piece that I mostly judge a build on.

Can't tell you how many models I judged at IPMS Regional and Nationals contests back in the day that had tons of added details everywhere, and most of them never made it out of the 1st round of judging because their basics just plain sucked.

Patrick, I'm with Joel on this too. I too used to judge IPMS and also have awarded first places to OOB builds that were examples of just plain clean building and painting over highly aftermarket parted builds that were just not as cleanly built.

This is an example of clean building, keep up the great work!

David,
Excellent point about AM that the builder bought. We never gave much if any points for adding it to a build, but sure subtracted points or eliminated the build for poor workmanship in adding those AM parts. The focus has always been on perfect building basics.

By the way, that yellow is the raw styrene. It is going white.

Does anyone use frisket paper? Is it still made?

Thanks for all the comments, guys! I appreciate the notice. And I am going to have to bite the bullet and do a... gulp... gloss clear coat as Michael at IndyCals did a flat finish on the decals.

Wait... can I just spray the entire sheet of decals with clear and then apply? Does that affect removing the decal from the paper?

Hi Patrick,

Yes, frisket is still available. I get it from Blick’s Art. FWIW, I tend to do two coats of gloss over the base, polishing each, then add decals with two more coats/polish over decals on the base. Seems to work fine.

D - your Chevy is looking great! Looking forward to seeing more!
Cheers

I can imagine it would be difficult to hold back when you have a detailing "blank canvas" on your bench. Sometimes blasting through a simple and straight OOB build can be a great stress relief, but then sometimes I suppose just the opposite

Either way, this build is coming together very nicely Patrick, I'm looking forward to more progress reports coming through.

Patrick,
Almost half of my builds for the last few years have been decaled with Indy Cal decals, and most of the other decals including kit decals from Nunu, Platz, & Beemax all have matt finishes, not gloss finishes. Personally, I prefer the Matt finish, as the decals are just that much thinner, and I'm going to seal them with Clear Gloss as the final step of my decaling process.

I'm a firm believer in the necessity to seal the decals as very light colors have a tendency to yellow over time, but worse, any clear film will also yellow and it's much more noticeable.

I also don't use a clear gloss base for the decals. Paul Budzik, a IPMS National winning modeler, and a pioneer in refining and developing many of the modeling methods & techniques we use today, did a fantastic video on how to properly decal including preparing the surface without gloss. It's the smoothness we need, not the shine, and it's less added layers that will eventually fill recesses and small details. check out his video, it's an eye opener for sure.

Very short bench session tonight, trying to tie up some little details. I painted the trim on the dashboard (still needs some tidying up) and the ignition controller, and scratched up an ignition coil from some sprue scraps and flat stock. From a couple of reference images I've seen, the coil is actually mounted on the firewall. I will paint this up in red and use some BMF for a mounting bracket once it's in place.

D,
The Dash and instruments really look quite good. Sounds like a plan for the coil. I've seen lots of coils mounted just about anywhere but near to the distributor. So following your references is the way to go.

Thanks Joel. Just these 3 parts plus the top section of roll cage to install, then some touch-ups on the interior paint and I'm done. I've really enjoyed this kit and would definitely build it again if the opportunity arose.

all the builds look great. if you hadn't noticed i have not made any updates in a while. well unfortunately i had a serious accident back on the 21st of june. i broke my back in a fall and am in rehab center called kessler here in NJ. i am in a wheel chair and when i do go home i will have a lot more to focus on than models, although i couldn't work on them if i wanted to because my bench is down stairs out of reach. so i will probably have to drop out of this and my entry in the aeroscale campaign i joined too. maybe you could postpone for me.just in case i am not going to officially withdraw, i intend to finish at some point but i do not know when that will be. my injury is not something that will be fixed in a couple of months. i was really enjoying these builds too, but i will try to follow along on everyone's progress at least
happy modeling guys- joe

Joe, your build was progressing really well, I'm sure that I can speak for the full crew here that we all want to see it finished. Even more so, we all want to see you recover soon and back to full strength. The Group Build leader or any admin staff can award your ribbon at any time in the future, but right now focus on fixing your chassis!

Best wishes, D

Joe, sorry to HEar about your accident. Can anyone relocate your work space even temporarily for you? I found model building a great source of comfort during rehab when I cut off one of my fingers.

Hoping for a great recovery.

Joe,
OMG!!! So sorry to hear about your broken back. Just focus on a full and speedy recovery. I'm hoping that the prognosis is indeed for a full recovery.

As Damian said, the GB leader and Moderators can award you a completion ribbon at any time. I fully agree with Damian that your health issues come 1st. I'm in 100% agreement with Damian that you will be given all the time you need to recover, then finish your build.

Get well my friend, and please stay in touch.

Just wanted to let you guys know that this afternoon I'm scheduled for Cataract surgery on the eye that I see with. I also need that same surgery in the basically useless left eye. But I'm not sure if I can see after the surgery at all, let alone be able to go online, watch tv, or even EAT Hopefully, I'll have some sight shortly afterwards, but how quickly my eyesight returns is a guess at this point. Usually it's hours to a few days, but that's never my luck.

After both surgeries, I'm supposed to start injections in both eyes for my Retina Edema and now Molecular Degeneration. Yeah, it just keeps on getting worse. I just can't catch a break.

Wish me luck guys, I'm a little nervous about these procedures.
